ive seen a few of these. did they come stock this way in the 70s, or was it just a common mod?
ill bet it sounds very amazing.
A common mod. I don't see the point of it, though. The mustang bass pickup is great as it is, and sounds almost the same as a precision pickup.
the reason for me would be 2 fold:
as far as the RI pickup, im not too into it. to me it was much weaker than a typical pbass pickup. never played an OG mustang bass though.
i think pbass pickups are the most comfortable thumb rests ever. something about em, i guess. just in the right place, for me. the stang one wouldnt fit the bill.

interesting. must be the shape of my thumb; i feel like the mounting screw and pickup cover surface form just the right angle at just the right place that my thumb feels super anchored to the bass.
I anchor my thumb on the pickup, too. The P bass pickup is more comfortable than the mustang one for sure, I think because its wide and flat as opposed to narrow and curved. A minor annoyance for me, though. My P bass does have higher output, and of course you have the multitude of replacements types available for P bass pickups, so I retract my comment about it being pointless. I guess I should say its pointless for me, because I like the sound of my stang bass, a lot. If I need more output, I'll just use my boost pedal, though. One question, though: would the pole pieces on a P pickup line up with the strings on a Mustang? I think the Mustang has much narrower string spacing.

interesting point on the strings matching the pole pieces of a p pickup... would a p bass neck even fit a mustang bass ? actually.. i think the neck on this mustang is a p bass neck since i haven't seen many stangs with a maple neck but it looks 70's so it could be the orig mustang neck after all...
