thoughts on vox ac30 handwired head?

Post by finboy »

tax return will be in soon and i'm in the market for a good clean amp to match my rocker 30.

i was looking at silverface fender super reverbs as i've heard ac30 cc's are troublesome, but i've found the hand wired ac30 head's are about the same price as the super reverb combo's.

(this one is about $200 more than the other on ebay).

i use a lot of effects and though my current mesa f50 handles them well, it lacks head room to my ears. once the volume gets to around 12 o'clock you can hear the signal start to distort.

thoughts?

My understanding is that the AC30s don't have much clean headroom these days. The handwired has the EF86 based preamp in channel 1, so it might be a little cleaner but IDK.

Super reverbs will break up to. Mine would break up around 4 or so, but in a good way. Get it up to the 12 o'clock and it was loud as fuck and definitley had breakup. Go for a 100 watt bassman or a twin if you want headroom.

damn, i'd heard super reverb's broke up later. there is a late 70's twin reverb at a pawn shop near me but it would need a lot of work.

Jim Heath uses a super reverb for most of the overdriven work in the Reverend Horton Heat. twins have much headroom.

Those are, essentially, Twin Reverb heads.

The Dual Showman is a lot like the Bassman 100 head I had.

I could get a small degree of distortion out of it IF I 1.) jumped the channels 2.) turned every knob to 10 3.) used a guitar with high-output buckers 4.) used a booster.
Choose 3.

Otherwise, it was clean as a whistle.

Id say its worth 250 if it works. They're pretty desierable thanks to the dick dale connection. But i dunno, its your call. If you like twins than you'd like it.

So, $350 plus maybe $50-75 worth of tubes? Sounds like a steal for a PTP handwired American amp with reverb.
