so i was wandering around today and had the chance to play a few different things, and as tis the season to pick up a new bass (not that my jazz bass clone doesn't satisfy most of my needs) i opted to snake some time with my favorite girls
the mustang bass
and then the bronco bass
and to be honest aside from the pup i think i prefered the bronco
maybe it was the maple neck (tee mustang neck was a bit smother, but more chunky)
and as far as the pup goes, thats a quick pickguard and body mod
but my question to the fellow scalers out there
is i know some of you have one of either, and i'd like some points for or against
keep in mind that the bronco is about $210 CDN and the mustang is $799 CDN

i do like me some jaguar basses, but the bronco would be easiest, just get a tad better tuners

I have both:
The Mustang bass is perfect, for me anyway. I really like the pickup, and this is important: if you're not 100% on the mustang bass pickup, then changing it will be a hassle. There aren't really any commercially available alternatives (short of having a builder custom make one for you), and the body cavity route is a tight fit, so it would have to be enlarged to accommodate something different. But if you like the sound and feel, then it's a great bass "out of the box", since all the parts are top-notch quality.
The Squier Bronco sounds like ass, but as you said that's an easy fix for this one. The body route for the pickup is actually quite large, you could probably fit a precision pickup in there with few hassles. The tuners are quite cheap, I plan on replacing mine. But despite the minimalism of the bridge, this part holds up fine. Mine intonates perfectly and it feels like a solid part. Mine is staying on.
I bought my Mustang bass in December, before the price hike (I paid $600 Canadian). It was a good deal then, and I adore mine, but now that the price has ballooned, I'd say the better value is the Bronco. The cost of customizing it to all your preferred specs will still end up costing you much less than the Mustang bass. For the new price of the Mustang, I find it ridiculous that they don't even include a gig bag. If I hadn't beaten the price increase, I would have only bought the Bronco.
Oh, and another detail: the Squier has shielding... and the Mustang bass doesn't!
Here's a
link to axemusic.com (I think they're in Alberta), they're offering the Bronco bass for $165 Canadian.

There's this music shop that has a mustang bass tagged for something grazy, like... 900 bucks, or something. I know I'm never buying it for that price, but I keep going back just to play it because it's so awesome. Considering the price differential alone, the Bronco really isn't that far behind. It's a shame those Badtz Maru basses are now more expensive than the regular ones, though.

if it were me, i'd buy the jag-bass. srsly.
why?
i've owned a stang bass...not enough bass in that bass.
bronco bass? kinda looks like the mustang bass's retarded fag cousin, bronco. (hahahaha) (oh yeah, and i loves me the gayz, so suck it)
i've played the jag bass a few times..and fuck me it's a pretty assed instrument...a REAL bass.

Probably a setup fee or something...
I'm also going to grab one of those $90 blonde shortscale tele's when they come back around.
But this... for $149 this should make Fender ashamed of themselves.

i love the jag bass, but not the price.
plus maple on red = teh sex
i kind of want to pull the neck off and toss it down my stairs a couple times though..
and it is perfectly panda sized.
i've been informed that the bass now belongs to my stuffed panda.

Dude, you should drop SD basslines single coil pickup in there.
if it weren't for the light body of the bronco I'd totally do the same thing. I like me a slightly heavier bass though.

GNAR!
that could happen.. since i plan on putting the pup from the bronco into the bridge spot on my red mustang.
but then again.. i'm becoming quite fond of it..
we'll see what happens in the next month or three as that pup looks quite dangerous.

That's very nice. I want to buy the one that's near me, but a hefty scooter repair bill, common sense and a vengeful wife prevent me from doing so.
