price for mij strat (with some new info)

Post by damienblair17 »

there's a craigslist ad for a red MIJ strat. It's got SD Classic Stacks in the Neck and Middle and a Hot Rails in the bridge. He's asking $440 firm for it. how good or bad of a deal is this?

EDIT: so I found out that the guitar was made in 85 or 86 (it's got a B in the serial number) and it's got some sort of floyd rose looking trem (floating trem?) for a bridge.

im posting my MIJ strat for alot less than that later on tonight. but it doesnt have fake humbuckers (or fake singlecoils, depending on your perspective)

MIJ stuff is worth more than it sells for, alot of the time. if its a JV model, its worth well over 440 if its in nice condition.

its just the first two letters in the serial on the early japanese fenders. stood for japanese vintage or soemthing, and they were really really nice copies of vintage gear.

ive never seen one in person but they are supposedly great and look really nice.

i googled it and got these as my top 3 hits:

http://www.guitarsjapan.com/fenderchart.html

http://www.peerlesstone.com/node/57

http://www.japanguitars.co.uk/Page%201%20history.html

im just saying.

this link is a bunch of pics of them:

if you see one, grab it for gods sake. unless its at full value. if its at full value, chastise the person responsible and tell them they are killing rock and roll.

It stands for Japanese Vintage. the fenders were intended for the domestic market (japan) and the squiers were intended for the foreign market.

and I think there was a period sometime around the transition between CBS fender and modern fender that they were selling MIJs in the US. I'm not sure if these were JVs though.

so, no JV fenders, then. just squiers.

ok.

my squier is an 86 and an E series, which i think was right after the A series, which was right after JV.

nah, you were right about the fenders I'm just sayin that they were the early squiers too. The brand just depended on what market they were selling them in.

yo, check out this website http://www.21frets.com/

mostly focuses on squier JV but has a general description of how the whole thing went down. really fascinating. the JVs were made by the same team that had been making the Greco fender copies. the squiers even used Greco overstock (as well as some CBS fender overstock).
