Those pick-ups are the gold foil teisco ones which Ry cooder uses.

They are very sought after now.

in the cheap hondo II, i actually don't know shit about ry cooder, i know teiscos, but i wonder how true this is..it being a youtube comment and all..

This bloke recons about $100 street value (Link) I guess in ££ it would be the same figure but mileage may vary...

Great looking pickups and that Bridge on the cooder Strat is mental. How to un-boring a strat in one stroke.

yeah it does look cool on the boring strat

the thing is, well i can't speak for the fender strat with those pickups but on the hondo II it only really shines with an overdrive or distortion on it, the nastier the better, you really get that nasal almost coachwhips sort of sound that i love but the cleans aren't really that good if you like to use cleans.

Cooders set up sounds like this, not totally clean - bit of dirt in there for sure although there are tons of vids where he's playing very clean. got any Vids of the Teisco?

As a firm Strat spanker myself i do think they get unfairly bashed because of the Session-ponytail brigade image... Like it when people give them individual flare.

i'm not a blues fan but i like his guitarsound there, just the sound not so much what he's playing

that sort of lo fi dirty sound, it's why i'm such a huge john dwyer obsessed lol

i don't have a teisco though, the pickups are in a hondo II i have, i wonder how they would sound in another guitar. so there's only a demo i did of that hondo II but on a solid state amp and the cam's mic so it's far from ideal

Oh god I'm so hung over :(

Every statement I make today should be filed under the "probably wrong and bleeding obvious" category!

Neither are the ones in your Hondo, polepieces and two foil strips are reversed, cover is wider with side mounting screws, etc...

They're at least very close, it's just that they appear to be in a different cover and of a slightly different configuration, as in an "eyeballed" copy, but it COULD be a variation on the pickup from whoever originally manufactured them, as they were surely in many guitars. Hard to say with that old import stuff.

I have better pics of Cooder's sunburst strat with the lapsteel bridge/pickup assembly on it, as well as of his sonic blue mid 60s matching headstock/neck binding strat, and they both have the foil pickups in them... the overall pickup looks to be a different shape, less wide side-to-side and more fat "neck to bridge", so to speak.
