The problem is, the high E string doesn't hold tune when tuning up. It tightens and the pitch goes up, only for it to suddenly slack and lose pitch completely. After a few rounds of tuning and detuning, it snaps at the angle where the string goes down into the tuner peg hole. It has only started doing this since yesterday. Although the peg does move and rattle a bit without a string in it, the tuner peg itself doesn't seem to move when the string just suddenly slacks. I've never had this problem before, has anybody got any clues as to what is wrong?
Sorry for my noob string - tuner related question, I know how you all love these.
first, make sure you've done a proper wind for your tuning peg. then, stretch the string really well by pulling it pretty hard. you should feel it slacken up the first couple of times you do this. re-tune it. repeat these steps two more times, then do it to all the other strings, and then repeat the entire process two more times. your guitar will stay in tune much better.

Well its not that it just de tunes slightly due to unstretched strings, I can't even get it close to proper pitch before it either loses pitch completely or breaks at the top.
Maybe you are actually binding at the nut or string tree. After a couple of strums it gives a little and goes slack. Try a dab a vasloline at the nut and tree. Maybe just breaking at the tuner peg because this is where the bend makes the string the most weak.
You have a Fender Mustang? I had this problem with mine and never found out what was the cause. Maybe there is a sharp edge on the tuner, slowly cutting into the string and allowing it to stretch more and more before eventually snapping?
I have had that problem on split shaft tuners before, but only on the high E. I swear, every time I string the G&L strat I use 2-3 string on it before I get one to string up and hold. Once it does it is fine though.
They say great minds think alike....Sometimes we do too...
I've only had high e's break on me a few times when I'm stringing up my mustang. But they always slip out. It's quite annoying but, you just have to have patience when stringing.
