are boss pedals consistent?

i'm asking this as i want to get another SD-1. the one i currently have is well used, but still functions. most demo's however seem to show the sd-1 having a little more gain than mine seems to have. i'm thinking along the lines of picking another one up cheap and if i don't like it, i plan to mod it.
thoughts?

Pickup type, pickup height and slight amp grit in the demo could all be giving that impression of increased gain. I'd imagine mass-produced pedals don't really vary that much, epsecially in the same timespan and location (ie: not the Japanese vs Taiwanese versions), given the testing done to parts and such.

This question made me realise that I've never had to find a direct replacement for any of my Boss gear cuz it's pretty much bullet proof.

Hell- if it works for you, go for it. I'm the same with my RAT- it doesn't do everything I like, but for a full heavy OD/distortion with singlecoils, I can't beat it.

I'm finally at that kinda stage where i know what sounds i like and what combinations i need to get them.
i've got a nice balance now, where the sd-1 is a nice rhythm tone on the clean channel, yet still be loud enough to boost the drive channel for leads.

fucked up, then they said it was my fault, apparently their battery in the pedal is my fault

SD-1's are great pedals. Aside from the weird leaky bypass thing that can happen sometimes.

the only boss pedal i had was the CS-3, it worked well and will indestructible but i sold it because i dont play fingerpicking country so i dont need a compressor.

I've sat in a used music shop called music go round for a while, and played 3 different SD-1's, and each one sounded different, all were externally pwr'd, not a battery thing. I also played 2 different Reverb pedals, and one was smoother than the other. So yeah, they differ, especially from year to year. I used the same guitar, through the same amp, and didn't touch the knobs on the guitar, and tweaked knobs on all of the boss pedals and they all had different charaterisiticsorz.
