ever had a piece of gear with a story attached?

i've been digging around on the internet, looking for information on the dreaded tube screamer. i brought a TS-9 the other day, 2nd hand for £50. it was in good condition, minus the box. i didn't know if it was a standard one or a reissue one, so i took the back off. on the circuit board, it reads maxon instead of ibanez. which means it would of been made before ibanez stopped being supplied by maxon. also the chip in it is a ta75558p, which is one of the earlier chips used. so this TS-9 dates from the early 80's, making it an original one.

bit of a geeky story, but thought it was cool. anyone else ever brought something that turned out to have more to it than they thought?

as far as I understand the only tubescreamers that didn't have the JRC4558 were the TS10, the TS5 and some of those early 80s TS9s (they ran out of the JRC and had to temporarily use some other chips). all the reissue TS9s, the TS7 and the TS808 have the JRC4558.

like all these well known players have used the TS9 but did they have a JRC TS9 or one of the other ones? no one knows. you should get a reissue or a TS7 and A / B them.

i quite like the ts-7. fran has one and that hot switch is pretty fucking good.

there's some cork sniffer on the gear page thats listed all the different chips with sound clips. he doesn't rate the chip mine has very highly, but he say's its one of those from the early random chip era.

My gear is played by me, in my room. Sometimes the neighbours must hear 8)

I found a box of things in the bins outside my flat. In it included an Ibanez Flanger, budget Shure mic / compressors and a bunch of cables.

The Flanger FL-301 I found was also Maxon made... in the older style casing, recently sold it on ebay with a battery clip missing for £46. :D

When i compared it with the re-issue FL9 I felt they were worlds apart, the original being much better !! Due to the fact it was 18v and problematic I was glad to see the back of it. Sometimes, it's just good to have new gear. :D

I bought my bass from a guy called Toby Macfarlane who'd been using it on tour in Graham Coxons band...
It arrived in a hard case covered in tour stickers which was quite cool...
It's just a shame I don't like Graham Coxon...

When I google searched "left handed fender mustang" I find euan's lefty mustang, but then googling "left handed fender jagstang" I find my mustang. It makes no since to me, as it's posted on the fender forum, saying it's a mustang. Odd, but recognition the least. Pic is old, back when it was stock.

My youtube vid comes up first if I google 1957 Danelectro U1. It's signed by Honeyboy Edwards.

That's as close as I get to any famous associations (that I know of). Given the amount of old stuff I've had second-hand, I'm guessing at least one bit has been from a "name".

There's a Visual Sound where they compare chips in the same pedal. SO LITTLE DIFFERENCE

The same people that think op-amps make a difference in tubescreamers think that a TS-808 circuit is better than a TS-9 et al.

It is two resistors different. Neither affect the sound.

This is main reason I hate tubescreamers, because a lot of the people that like them talk complete shit about them. I deal in science. Fuck off with your mojo.

The part 6mins into the video about chip production is pretty interesting. It's crazy how heresay and rumor can become "truths".
