I'm a relatively new player looking for a quality used mustang. I've been looking at this one but it seems sketchy

What is up with the serial?

Looking at some of his other sales, it looks like that guy prints out those numbers (maybe personal items numbers for his shop) and puts them over the serial numbers in the photos. This means other sellers can't sell off his guitars as their own in fake auctions. Other examples:

It looks like that bass is from an overstock too. you can see the "used" imprinted on the top of the headstock

what? 'used'? Its the manufacturers serial number printed in the headstock... some epiphones have it imprinted like that

i'll say it again, even though we've already gone over it.

i got a brand new epiphone dot from a guitar store online. no ebay, no nothing.

when it came to me, it had the USED stamp right above the SN label. i don't think it's this particular guy doing it.

I may be wrong, but if its stamped 'used' that just means it has had some type of damage from shipping or from the factory
and it had been fixed by the factory. Even though it says 'used' its still new.

some have USED stamped on them. its not the serial number. they're like factory seconds or something. or ones that people
shipped back to them.

it means that they aren't covered by epiphones warranty

The USED stamp is put on at the Epiphone factory when the guitar has a defect. Not the same as a factory second though.
A "used" guitar can be any number of things from dealer warranty returns to factory rejects to guitars used at promotions and too shop-worn to be sold as new. The basic problem and thing to remember is that what ever the defect is Epiphone found it serious enough that it will in no way stand behind it. This could mean an improper neck angle or neck set...improper bridge placement... faulty electronics (requiring more than minor repair)...neck twists...all serious enough that Epiphone doesn't want to hear about them ever again.

At the same time, if the guitar is sound enough, then you shouldn't need the warranty. It could have been rejected because of a finishing blemish or something.

i'll have to post pics. the guitar is utterly flawless. only blemishes are from not wanting to shell out dough for a huge dot case!

srsly, i wish they'd put a fucking post it on the inside of the f-hole that says like "hey, no biggie. fucking neepach dropped his donut on the body before paint, so we had to stamp it used. don't worry, necks not fucked or something."

even "hey, the neck is fucked on this piece. DO NOT BUY" would work. at least i'd know WTF it's stamped used.

Big part of the reason im skeptical about guitars like that on ebay
