Picking up a '72 Tele Deluxe Today - Caps & Pups

Post by Chicago Mike »

I'm picking up a beat '72 Tele Deluxe today and was curious if anyone has had changed out their caps or pickups. I've read where people have swaped tvalues but haven't figured out the general rule of thumb.

Does anyone have a general explination of cap values and their desired effect?

**Not sure if this is the prorper area for this topic. **

Higher value caps roll off more treble, lower values roll off less. So if it's too bright, you could increase the value of the cap or vice-versa.

Higher value pots prevent more signal from reaching ground, so the sound is brighter and louder.

Awesome, thanks!

I'm gonna order some 1meg pots from Torres and I've got to address some noise issue with it too. Guessing it might be grounding or something with the input jack.

I don't know, just thought there might be some alternatives out there. Definitely not originals!

stock deluxe pups are great already! Don't change em.

In fact, I wish I could change all of my humbuckers to deluxe pups.

Agreed. Fine pickups, if you find them dark then up the pots. As always it's a good idea to suck it and see and see whether it works for you before pulling out the soldering iron.

I actually do like the pickups but they're both a bit too muddy (espically the neck). They sounded really good but just not enough clairty.

I'm going to try changing out the Pots, but I have a question: Do you need to switch out all the pots to 1met or just the volume knobs?

All will give you the most pronouced effect but volume only will still change things.

Right on, thanks a lot. It's a pretty solid guitar, it's gonna take some time getting used the chunky neck but I like it.

Does changing the caps have an affect on sounds/tone?

mike, you get your pots from smallbear do you not? ima change the pots in the jazzy to 1M at some point rather than try replacing the pups.

Just to whip out my experience here, I replaced all the stock pots with 500k after finding the stock 250k a bit dark and flabby and 1M a little bright. There are two .022uF caps on the tone pots, but I left those as-is.

SmallBear or Banzaieffects.de. Or Musikding.

Reminds me, I'm off to the warehouse to get some parts.

Yeah, this might be my path as well but I want to try the 1meg first and fall back to the 500 if needed.

Thanks for the input.
