Hi Shortscale

I know Oilver ackermann uses Death by audio pedals almost exclusively but do you guys know any cheaper pedals that could steer me in this direction

I can't actually offer anything to your plight... but I did want to say I really enjoyed both the song and the video. Thanks for that. Going to check on more stuff by them.

Not many cheaper pedals get the kinda grindy glitchy fuzzes that appear to be going on there... the Zoom Ultra Fuzz may be worth a go if you can find one.

I enjoyed that, like a modern JAMC.

The first song is dominated by short delay and the second has heavy reverb, the Fuzz sounds really basic to me. Very trebly, which suggests it is transparent so i'd look at a Fuzz Face- a decent one. Then use it with a trebly guitar, i noticed a Lipstick (in a Jag?) on the video, i think thats 60% of the sound you are hearing.

aye, someone posted about that guy's jag before, it does have some sort of lipstick in it.

That is definitely the main factor to my ears, it sounds trebly harsh with no sustain.
You'd probably achieve this sound (as long as you have a Lipstick in the bridge position) with something as basic as a DS-1 and a cheap delay set on 'slapback' with about 6 repeats.

although, it's not a million miles away from the jag sound on this (about 0:36 onwards- you have to wait for cave to stop squawking before you can hear it properly). i dunno if it's just unusual amp settings here, he doesn't seem the sort to have much in the way of pedals.

I was under the impression that Oliver Ackerman from APTBS uses Death By Audio almost exclusively is because Oliver Ackerman is Death By Audio, it's his company.

I really liked that first video/song. So disorienting, dreamlike and nightmare-ish... Definitely one of the better 'nugaze' bands to come around.

Would a lipstick pickup be a direct fit? like the seymour duncan for strat ones.

The SD ones and the ones from GFS are direct fit replacements. Danophobic ones are a bit smaller than standard single coil size I believe.

They're actually longer if that's what you meant. Danelectro pickups are longer than strat pickups so they won't drop into a strat pickguard.

GFS sells them in regular size and strat drop in size.

Ah, thanks. I knew there was some sort of size difference between those and standard strat sized single coils.

"Boss" and "Fuzz pedal" are too words that should never be used together.
