PRS copy... don't hate !!

Post by othomas2 »

Always fancied a PRS for whatever reason but they've always been far too pricey for me. Anyways, was doing a bit of window shopping yesterday online came about this.. luthier made apparently and it looks pretty loyal to the original... with detailing up the neck etc etc

& wait... £160 !! Where's the catch ?

I spoke to the seller and he's in financial difficulty and needs to off load it. But I have noticed it's been advertised for a good 3 weeks or so now which adds to my suspicion. All I think is that the PRS guys only want PRS.

Gonna go try it out this wednesday... just can't fathom why it'd be so cheap... opinions ?

I know what you're saying but they do cator for a quite a broad spectrum of musical styles.. from country to metal and anything in between. Which can only mean they're pretty versatile machines.

I just like them aesthetically, and I've been after somethin' with buckers for a little while now...

Is mcconnachiea british for tool?

You forgot to tell him to add EMG's and a floyd rose too.

And dude, I'm really not teasing the guitar. Just the dudes that usually buy PRSs. My dad used to have one, not my thing but he liked it well enough.

People are wary of unknown luthiers and sometimes excellent guitars sell for very little.
I emailed a seller sometime ago about a similar project, turns out the seller was clearing out her dads workshop (he had died) as he was a smalltime luthier. I almost felt obliged to buy the guitar but it almost felt wrong as well, like creepy? In the end it was the nut that put me off! It had one of these huge crappy plastic nuts you get on budget Gibson copies. It just made me doubt the rest of the build.
Things are not always as they appear. It may be a photo finish top instead of a veneer, it may be made of cheap mahogany, is it set neck? etc. You can get PRS copies for that price quite easily to be honest.
However, you could be onto a winner plus you can play it first. Check for obvious things like intonation, a misplaced bridge or twisted neck is the last thing you want. Badly dressed frets, sharp fret ends and a poor nut are always good giveaways to the quality.
Do you have any closer more detailed photos?

You verified a few things there Fran, cheers dude.

My pet hate is sharp frets !!

I've asked for some photos so hopefully I'll received them today.

Also asked for the makers name and if it is a set neck.

If I don't receive photos I'll not go see the guitar tomorrow.... simple as that.

p.s. this is why I'm selling the GT2...

They do look good from 5 yards away. Ironically something like a Gordon Smith does'nt but get close up and feel the guitar the difference in quality is apparent.
It may be really good though.
Just bare in mind you can usually pick up certain Korean PRS models for sub-£200.
