avri jaguar: re-visited

so, since my prized hh jag with all the custom love i'd thrown in was taken -- which i'd been pretty much playing non-stop for two years, always reached for it and come to know it very well -- i've been getting reacquainted with my avri jag i got in 2005:
it's noticeably heavier, but the balance is near perfect. the white nitro on it is simply lovely; olympic white just looks creamier and warmer in this finish. i also have to say the fit and finish is superior to the cij's i've ever played in several aspects. for one, the chrome control plates are not only a hair thicker, but the edges are finished better, less sharp or harsh. the pickguard's brown tortoise shell is one of the best examples of this material i've ever seen. the japanese and mexican models' tort is disgusting and cheap and give the real deal a bad name. the neck feels great, very comfortable. i do have to admit that i still preferred my hh as the frets were finished better and the width just seemed different. but the avri doesn't feel bad in any sense of the word. the switches and knobs/pots all have solid, smooth movement to them. kluson tuners always seem to have great movement and stability to them, and this guitar's set is no exception.
when i play the jag unplugged, it actually sounds loud for a solid body. the infamously long bridge-to-trem length sacrifices a bit of sustain, but that is a jag after all, isn't it? action isn't flat or what i would call fast. the hh jag had this quality, and it was another reason for my infatuation. i have to admit, though, that the avri's action is totally playable and even pretty easy. i have mine setup with 11's, and my fingers have no problem fretting chords or plucking notes clearly and cleanly.
i'm totally appreciating this instrument that i used to live only in its case to preserve it. i'll review the electric sounds the next time i practice with it. cheers.

i guess thats the upside, is you can reacquaint with a fantastic guitar
and not a bad one at that.

Agree with you on all but Mexican Tort comment. My Jaguar does not have ugly Tortoise, or I would not have bought it. It looks good, nothing like that inkjet style wank you get on some guitars. KTHX.
Glad you're getting reacquainted though, Jaguars are great.

Thats great news dots. Im pleased something good is happening for you.
To be honest i've got 5 case queens, but it looks like the FIAT has about died and K wants a VW Beetle so some of my secondary stock must be sold. Looks like i'll be joining you soon, dusting off the cases to begin with
Did'nt you have a SD Angry Rails fitted in that back in the day?

Oh yeah, did you post the serial numbers of the stolen guitars? Post it in the pub so it doesn't get seen by browsers, or classifieds even better
We'll be on the lookout

hey miek: sorry about the dis on your mim's tort. i coulda' sworn the ones at fucktard center were fuckin' 'orrible as the jap ones, but that could just as easily have been disgust carried over from seeing all the relic'd strats and teles they had out that day. will make a point to view them again.

Nor does my CIJ of the same colour scheme, to his credit though I've seen a lot of bad tort on CIJ and MIM Fenders. Somehow the Jazzmasters always get it right, maybe because there's more at stake if they don't.

I think it's variable, with some entire lines like teh Classic Vibe Jazz Bass and the new Jagmaster having really gash photocopied crap.
This is mine:

gorgeous. i'll be stopping by guitar center this week to get some photos. i wouldn't even be surprised if the mim stock we get here was a shoddier quality than the ones they ship overseas. fender's brilliant like that. . .

Oh my god, oh barf, needs vintage tort, needs gold guard, needs amber switch tip, meatball, pizza etc etc. true bypass.
I still miss my old AVRI Jag, but its spirit lives on in the bicycle I bought with the proceeds.

still haven't been to fucktard center yet (gee, you think it could be because i haet the fuckin place?), but the band finally did get together last night. the jag did wonderfully. the last setup i had done on this guitar several months back must have been a good one because the strings all stayed in place even with all the abuse i gave it.
as for the tones, all i had to do to get sound i wanted was roll off the treble on the drive channels on the jvm. i quite liked the added clarity to the pick attack. . . single coils appear to lend themselves better to the type of music i write and the less overdriven tones i go for these days; i'm even using the neck pickup more and more recently. i didn't even need to engage the fish 'n chips eq at all. do have to note, though, that i am using someone else's straight marshall cab as my angled 1967 is in st jimmy's garage. i contend there is a stark tonal difference between these cabs in that the straight cabs sound darker to me.
but yeah, it's a jag. the cleans are super jangly, and adding the neck pickup to the situation yields a shit-ton of bass without sacrificing bite. what i'm impressed by is how well this guitar bucks the idea of "you can't play hard/heavy rock on a jag." fuck that noise, this axe jammed just fine last night. my tastes might have lightened a bit over the years, but you won't hear me playing lillith faire tunes anytime soon. i still use ALL FOUR CHANNELS ON THE JVM, MOTHERFUCKER.
now, when the dotsmaster shows up later this week, that should be trill and p0ast-worthy. will try and do video w/ r0br00zle.
