Modding a Toronado

Post by blacktaxi »

The Toronado I bought from Rod is about to be shipped, so I was considering this little mod to the guitar as it arrives:
- replace one tone pot with push-pull pot for parallel coil conduction switching
- replace another tone pot with push-pull pot for phase switching

Good idea?

Also, anybody has original wiring schematic for GT HH toronado? What pots are used there?

People always do this then say "oh man it's so amazing, I get 37 different switching combinations now, it's so versatile". But really they all sound pretty similar. Split humbuckers never sound particularly good either. I recommend... just play the thing!

Yeah, good point, I'm just afraid that they will sound too alien for me, I've been using exclusively single coils for pretty much all the time.
But I meant not coil splitting, I want parallel connection, that should give more highs but won't as thin as half-a-bucker.

Well anyway, I don't like push-pulls, and I don't want to make any holes in the body, so probably I won't do anything to the guitar and just play it. Just considering this mod as an option.

the LP style wiring and pup config are pretty versatile as is. play it, and find out what you're not getting from it. then approach the mod step.

i never had a problem getting all sorts of sounds out of it, but two humbuckers just leaves so much to be desired (i.e. single coil toanz).

You wont need to mod it dude. They're awesome, lots of tone from them Duncan designed buckers and mahoganies. Just mess with your tone knobs.
I believe the pots are 500k.
Glad you got it, post demo when it arrives!! :D

Yes sir!

I guess you're right about the mod, in the end it's not a kind of guitar that should be fucked with.

COIL TAPS RULE.

Anything else is really superfluous, though, and I've got an SG with a bazillion switches.
