I'm in the market for a mustang, but I found this cyclone for sale in my area and i'm interested in it. i've never played one though, and im thinking about going over to try it out. does anyone have an educated opinion of these instruments?

If you're after the mustang sound, you'll want nothing to do with this, obviously.
I think the dude is asking a bit much, even with the case thrown in. The Cyclones I have played were all pretty well built while still being distinctly 2K MIM in that just how nice they are will vary from one to another alot. If you're not after the Mustang sound or the neck, or the slimness of the body, I say go play it and try to deal him down to $450. Don't let him play the rarity card on you, either. These aren't that rare.

thanks. im really not too worried about the longer neck. not sure about the sound though. ive heard the single coil at the neck sounds crappy. and yeah, i would want to haggle him down. is the body comparable to a competition mustang?

The body is the same shape, but its thicker than a Mustang. Its the same thickness as a strat.

god i want one of these SO HARD right now.

I have that same exact guitar and paid around $300 for it. I think it's great but wouldn't go over that price, personally. It makes for a solid practice guitar and especially good at gigs that you'd be hesitant to bring something more expensive to. The bridge pickup is surprisingly good, imo, and while the volume drop-off in the neck can be annoying it's not that bad tonally speaking.

Ah yeah, I think everyone prefers the Cyclone II or the Cyclone US :

I think that's a Cyclone I with a bridge single coil installed.

The II had three Jag pickups (I think) and a Jag control plate. Or I'm thinking of a completely different guitar.

That's a US made Cyclone I, which is essentially just that (+ modern trem saddles and different tuners).

Technically it is... thats what the Cyclone US was. It was for the Japanese market (I have seen it called 'Japanese Cyclone'). Came in different colours as well I think to the usual cyclone.

It's not just the scale lenght, though. Mustangs generally have an A width neck with a pretty pronounced radius. Cyclones necks tend to be a bit thicker, with less of a taper and barely a radius to speak of. The only comparable trait between Cyclones and Mustangs (and this applies to any editoration of the former) is the body shape. You're probably well aware of this but I'm gonna go ahead and be insistant on this fact because the Cyclone as surrogate Mustang misconception seems to pop up on this board, every couple of months or so.

There was also a very limited run of HS US Cyclones.

Oh, I know what the Cyclone II is. I didn't mean that image was a Cyclone II. I meant people prefer the look of the Cyclone II OR the Cyclone US. The picture was just to show the Cyclone US as it is less pretty rare/uncommon.

I think it was my mistake that has led to confusion in this thread. I wasn't aware of the US Cyclone.

It's alright, I worded my post pretty badly. I have only ever seen one US Cyclone for sale on eBay, they seem really rare. Wikipedia also says there was a Custom Cyclone which was available for a short while with Lace Sensor pickups, black robroes and a vintage 2-point tremolo system. I would like to see that, sounds nice!

i mean you can get a mustang with an A neck but its going to be over 40 years old and cost you

Yeah. I wasn't 100% sure of that either. Fact remains that mustang necks are thinner, more tapered and more dramatically radiused than Cyclones.
