Danelectro 59 or 63

Post by dezb1 »

Right before everyone starts giving me grief both of these guitars are second hand.

I have been thinking about buying a danelectro guitar for a while and like buses two have come along at once. Both are recent reissues. My choices are thus: a dc 59 or a 63 both guitars are black. I’ve played both and can’t decide between them on sound so I’m trying to think of other ways to find the winner so far I’ve come up with this: The dc 59 has the Jimmy Page appeal, and the 63 has the Beck appeal (and I think might be the slightly cooler looking of the two). Which one would you go for?

I really like the look of the 59, the 63 never really did it for me.

I've had a '59 and I have a '63 baritone. I voted '59.

I voted '63, because ever since I saw that thing you do when I was a kid, I've wanted one of those!

I vote 59, especially if it's at a better price for you than the 63. I just recently picked up a burgundy first-series DC 59 reissue, and I absolutely love it. I do like the looks of the 63 though, and I've been looking for an old Silvertone 1448/1457 to satisfy that urge. The 63 has 19 frets vs. the 59's 21, if that makes any difference to you.

Check the sound first. In my experience the straight lipsticks sound much better than the angled ones, but YMMV. The aging stain on the 63's tape is wank, though.

The 63 is £30 cheaper than the 59. I never noticed that the 63 only had 19 frets; however I was thinking it would be more of a rhythm guitar so 19 Vs 21 frets won’t make much of a difference. My head is telling me to go for the 59 but there’s just something drawing me to the 63 (which I’ll probably regret in the long run).

It's obviously gonna be the '59. The '63 looks like a Willy Wonka signature model.

Oh come on. He didn't say 'second hand' until 12 words in. How am I supposed to read that far?

Looks like I won’t be buying either guitar as some smart cunt put nails all over the road at the end of our street, so I’ve just had to shell out £190 on two new tyres for my car.
