New Bass Day: '76 Mustang Bass w/maple neck!

Post by Pacafeliz »

well yes, the reason i'm selling my pink '78 mustang bass is this. just in... 1976 (rare 76 ... serial no.) Mustang Bass with original hardcase (somehow latches don't work, had extras added that ALSO don't work, and missing a handle) with a big MORTY stencil on top! :D

:P i have a special spot in my heart for maple necks. i just had to do it!!! (traded for the univox LP Jr.)

of course it's a refin, and OH THE HORROR the neck and head and all (except the logo... *sigh*) has been refinished. the color is actually darker and quite nice wine red. but i NEED to strip that neck. now my question is, how?! (apparently it was at one time stripped and painted SILVER yessir, and then this red on top. no idea on the original color...)

i sanded a bit on the neck butt to reveal some rubber stamps but it's a royal PITA, and the neck would end up looking too white and new and whatnot.

...any suggestions on what to do without ruining the original decal and serial number? some sort of paint stripper maybe? where do i buy that?
or will i HAVE to sand it off? :( - WTF goes on in people's heads when they do stuff like this?!?! :x

still... i'm happy. sounds and feels delicious, with old but yummy flatwounds.

ok, porn time!!!

OH GOD I HATE HATE HATE THIS!!! >:( (btw, flashback to about 10 years ago i saw A LOT of old jags and jazzmasters that had this sorta refin with the logo out, OR the matching headstocks sanded off and only the logo left... yeah they cost around $300-600 then. damn where are they now!?!?!?

well if MORTY refinned the bass he was an ass. (HA! i can't stop thinking about Jerry Seinfeld's dad, Morty!) :D

or... maybe i'll post this questions in the projects forum.
i'd still like to do the seafoam green with MOP body refin someday but for now i really like this bass' look!
rock on,

Pat.

ps: better sunshine pics tomorrow!
my name is Pat.

COOL!

If you're into wood grain, you might be interested to know that all '76 Fenders have ash bodies.

Sanding is probably the only way to go... with paint stripper, I think there's a real risk of accidently melting through to the logo.

i'd be tempted to strip it back to natural and go with an 'aged' clearcoat. i think astro's right about the headstock, unless you're very careful the logo could get sizzled with paint stripper.

you should either say fuck the decal and have one made, strip the headstock, and repaint...

or mask the decal off, strip the neck, and leave it au natural.

by 76 the decals were under the finish right?
so yeah,
mask, sand with mineral spirits and like 400 grit sandpaper.
if you just go at it with 100 grit or something you will gauge it too much.
