Yeah, my shiny new jaguar finally got a nick/dent/chip on it. I am pissed off too and slightly depressed. I know what your going to say.... suck it up, gives mojo. Well right now since of the shitty mood i'm in, I want it fixed or I want to fix it.
So I want to know.
1) Can I fix it myself?
2) Is it fixable w/o fucking up the rest of the finish?
3) Can anyone fix it (i.e. guitar fixer-upper guy)?
If this thread is bogus to you I'm sorry, I'm super depressed and sleepy and pissed over my beloved jaguar.

Paint is not the easiest thing to "fix"

if its laquer based you can try to melt it with a chemical that i forget the name of. which might make it blend in a little
better, or it might make it look worse.

if its poly,i have no idea. black guitar = sharpie fix. non black guitar = ?

its usually best to just live with it.

Poly finish, sunburst. I'm getting the feeling I'm fucked on this one though.

is it on the edge (in the black)?

if so you can probably hide it a little with a black permanent marker.

Yeah it's on the edge. I'll try it but I just make me pretty pissed.
My father and I were talking about it, he said I have to sand it down and refin the whole thing, which is pretty drastic....
I'm googling methods of fixing lacquer chips at the second hopefully something useful will come out of it though...
So far nothing.

Automotive touch-up paint, or nail polish should do a good enough job.

...or just suck it up - it gives it mojo. (As you mentioned - but that IS the method that I would recommend. It isn't a piece of art - it is a guitar!!!)

how big is the chip? i wouldn't worry about it, refinishing it would be extremely silly.

I was once like you. Then the last 5 guitars that I've bought have had their first battlescars inflicted upon them by people other than myself. So I've gotten over it, my bass that I play at every show, I've had for just over a year and you couldn't tell now that it was brand new when I bought it cause I play it hard as hell. Just rock out with it and have fun and don't worry about scratches and dents.

worrying about nicks on your guitar is like worrying about getting your dick wet during sex. your missing the point of using it.....

I remember getting that first nick in my first guitar, I was pissed beyond belief, now, I just don't care. It's paint, in the end it's gonna get chipped, scratched, dented, etc. Why prolong that from happening?

i can't wait for it to happen so the rokc can seep from its pores. my sunburst strat, i've babied the fucker for 3 years. then i dropped it down the stairs on its top (string side down) and broke a knob off (pot too) and chunked it nicely. I NEVER KNEW WHAT I WAS MISSING. i jam and like throw it around now and i feel like i play more free spirited.

Oh god, I have really bad gear trashing out of anger problems, and do the same as you sometimes, just for show.
Once my mustang wasn't working, checked all the nobs, and switches (note this was during a live show for my school), and we kept going through the song, so I just threw it onto the stage, and walked off.
On my ibanez I just throw it like whatever, it's a tough guitar, I've swung by the neck into amp cabs, the bass drum, the ground. It just keeps going and going.
Those are actually the only 2 guitars I tend to abuse. And I love my Mustang to death, but the more abuse the better it feels to me.
Amp cabs, now that's a different story, I had been drinking one night, and we put on a show for some friends, so I took the headstock on my ibanez and rammed it right through the top left speaker area, putting a nice hole in the meshing and speaker.
And then there's my old VOX, it stopped working at our 2nd show, so I took it and threw it on the ground.
The casing is destroyed, the amp part is still working though.
In reality, these all tend to happen in rare situations.

i had my jag from aen approx 12 hours before it had a new dent in the neck, and a chip of paint gone..
mind you i threw it into our drummer, who freaked out, because he fell in love with it in seconds


pro tip: treat all your guitars like they owe you money that you know they will never be able to pay.

Just fucking leave it. I've dinged my Jaguar too, I care less than you could possibly imagine.

I'm not going to refin it just as much as I'm not going to deliberately damage it. Just live your life and play guitar. Sheesh

i remember when i fucked up my goldtop. i slipped with chisel, trying to scrape some glue of it and took off the top layer of gold. i was gutted, still am a little. but it does look nice to see a guitar that's been played in, a few dings is all good.
