Really informative, this. Any advice for where to put mics if I'm only using two for drums? I'll be recording some songs live with my full band soon, and we can only do 5 tracks at once (2 guitars, 1 bass, 2 drums).

One in the kick for sure, and one about level with the rack tom, pointing towards the snare. It's easier to do with a one rack tom kit, since you've got the extra space to poke the mic into, but I've done it with 5 piece kits when recording demos for friends.

Just be sure to do some testing, and listen back before you record the proper take- as long as the snare, toms and crashes aren't getting lost, you're good to go. You can always put the kick mic a foot or so away from the drum to pick up more of the rest of the kit which will help add a bit more dimension to it.

I think our drummer only uses one rack tom anyway, so that's okay. I'll do what you say and have one mic on the kick and one pointing at the snare. That's what we've done before, and it seemed to pick the toms up fairly well, I just thought you might know a better way of doing it. Cheers.
