hey guys, thanks for the advice on drilling the control plate...i'm totes going that route for sure.

so check it. the cindicaster mk. I is now in full-fledged transformation mode into a dodger blue esquire type guitar with an orange comp stripe (step off stripe haters)

so really nothing out of the ordinary? i'm baws-deep in my first real "project" guitar and i've decided that i simply must have a tele control plate with only one hole in it.

Nothing out of the ordinary at all. Using a crappy 18v Ryobi and a cheap ass set of bits from harbor freight I've drilled through my car, my scooter, guitars... pretty much everything taht needed a hole in it.

yeah jim, doesn't take much to get through something like that. in this case, measure twice, drill once. what kinda project this is for?

i'm building the Cindicaster into a Dodger Blue Esquire. My first attempting at wiring a single coil with a split humbucker failed so hard i decided i wanted to conquer a wiring project that was butt simple. so i'm building myself an Esquire-Inspired guitar with a vintage style tele bridge and just a single coil in the bridge position with a single volume knob.

i decided to refin the guitar after i bought all the shit (paint, gloss, sanding shit, etc) for the Jagmaster i bought from Sparky. But when I got that guitar, i decided to slap my tele neck on it, and i'm going to probably change the guard and bridge out, maybe some other aesthetic changes, but since i didn't have a sunburst guitar, i decided to keep it bursted.

now, if more and more of the paint chips off over time, i'll definitely refin it, but for now, that paint is going towards my esquire. it's already been a learning experience of sorts, but i don't have HUGE high expectations for it, so if it looks half-way decent, plays and makes noice and the goddamned volume knob works, i will consider myself WINRAR.

You can do this with a hand drill. Here are a couple of tips. Clamp down the plate once the drill bit bites it it will spin like an airplane prop and you could get hurt a little bit. At a minimun wear a glove to hold the plate. Use a wood block to put the plate on - you will drill through the plate and into the block. Also, get a nail set or a punch and hammer and dimple the plate where you want it to be drilled. That way the drill bit will not walk around all over the place and scratch up the surface finish. You may want to start with a smaller bit, like an 1/8" and work up the the size you need. If this is all you are doing then get a cheap set of bits. Also do not use too much pressure or you can snap the bit and get hurt. I drilled through my thumb putting up gutters when I snapped the bit.

nice dude! ace advice, as has been all the advice so far...so looking forward to this thing...i'm really taking my time and trying to do it up right.

One word: Uni-bit.

One thing I have been doing is drilling a smaller pilot hole first, which gives the bit a place to grab, and also gives you a do-over in case you are off the first time.

Yes, definitely start with a smaller bit first.

does any have experience "making" comp stripes on a guitar? i've put the coat of orange down that will be the orange stripe and i plan to use painter's tape to cover the patch the stripe will go on and then paint blue...but does anyone have any protips?

What kinda blue? daphe blue might look good with orange.

yeah, it's as close to deep dodger blue as i can get it...i've actually had a lot of fun with this...and am starting to think that just MAYBE i'll refin another one of my guitars in the not too distant future.

progressing along...withholding pics for now...until it's ready to present. i already know that i could've done some shit better/different...but i knew all along this was going to be a "see what happens if i ____" kind of project...if/when i do this again, i know better materials and methodology now...very stoked on what this will look/sound like...even knowing i could've done some shit different.

but also SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THE ESQUIRE HAVING SEX WITH THE FRANKENFUCKINGSONIC.
