Help in final decision

Post by izodiak »

Hi ! Haven't posted nothing in a long time, but now I have a quite important question, I have now stacked up some money.. and I wanted to ask which guitar to choose.. I play kind of Nick Drake'ish thing.. and I wanted to get a hollow body, so I have three choices Gretsch G5120, Epiphone Casino, Epiphone Riviera 2 (from ikebe-gakki site).. I have played the Gretsch and I really liked it.. but those Epiphone hollow's look good too.. And You have played much more instruments than me, so I just wanted to hear Your thoughts..

I voted for the Riviera 2 (I like minihumbuckers), but equally the Casino would be lovely. All the Gretsch semis I've played, I wasn't too keen on. Too plasticky feeling.

you also might want to take a peek at the epiphone supernova. they came in blue like that and the oasis version with the union jack all over the front of it.

don't think they make them anymore but they were really nice guitars. im sure one could be had used for a good price since everyone but me and mike thinks oasis sucks now

im guessing the only difference between the new blue rivi 2 and the supernova is the pickguard and the truss rod cover on the headstock that says supernova on it

it also kinda looks like the rivi 2 has thicker body binding then the supernova. looks nicer to me

That exactly was the Rivera I was looking at, the blue one.. the looks bought me,its great.. but there are not too many videos on Youtube and in Latvia, we have two music stores stacked up on cheap Telecasters/Strats and LP's.. nothing 'interesting'.. And I would love to order from thomann or some other 'european' site.. cause I have a quite large gig (one of largest festivals in Latvia) and I wanted to get it by july 10th. So You all say I would be better off with an Epiphone.. eh.

shadow has the black one i posted. send him a PM telling him that i told you to ask him about it. if you say "robroe said i should talk to you" somewhere in the PM he will reply. if you don't probably not so much....dude has little time to waste with all these theme parties he is throwing every night to get sl00tz over to his place.

Ok, thanks Ill do it.. I just want to hear it a bit.. cant find a video nowhere, I can try to listen to Supernova, if they are the same. // Oh, but I like the Gretsch so much, the feedbacking now scared me.. (a pickup change would help?) // mm, theme parties.

I'd go with the Casino. The Casino is FULLY hollow, not just a semi-solid like (I think) the other options are. This will give you a definitely more warm and fullish acoustic-sounding tone. Also, P90s are more articulate and pleasant sounding than humbuckers, especially since you said you play in the vein of Nick Drake (finger style, arpeggios, complicated chord voicings). I think the Casino is a no-brainer in the lineup you listed.

Also feedback usually isn't a problem if you are playing clean or with mild overdrive, it becomes more of a concern if you are playing at high gain settings.

Yes, that exactly the thing I play.. (try to play, hah) . I play very little overdrive, sometimes.. So yes.. I really liked the Gretsch with the DeArmonds, but just in the neck position.. Epiphone Casino sounds nice.. oh, now Im more confused than ever.,why now when I got the money to buy something, and Im quite scared of making 'wrong' choices..eh.

if you can snag a riviera II or supernova in that blue, that would work well, casino's are also very nice considering you don't want to go with lots of gain.

i have a supernova in the union jack finish myself, great guitar (even though they are stupid expensive on ebay now)

Are you set on it being one of those three? They look good but there might be a better option elsewhere at a similar price point, perhaps availability in Lativa will be an issue though.

I would avoid the Gretsch. The electromatic series isn't all that. I think it's the best looking of the three, but in terms of quality for your money a good epiphone will serve you better. Based on looks I'd go for the casion of the two epiphones, but I'd also consider something Japanese and from the 70s, perhaps an Aria or Antoria. Those can be had for similar money as these and will likely be significantly better guitars.

FWIW, the Casino is a much better made guitar than the Gretsch. As with most Gretschs, you pay a high premium for sexiness - it really doesn't sound great (especially compared to the "real" Gretschs). I've been impressed with all the Casinos I've tried, and it sounds like single-coils are what you'd be after.
