1964 Duo Sonic project

Post by Sublimedo »

My buddy Martin had recently bought a 64 duo, but the seller had scraped off the Siena Burst finish back in the 60's. Other than that and a dead pickup it was a pretty mint deal. Complete with case

so it was up to me to lay a finish on it. I got this custom color in an aerosol off a paint shop here in town. LOEV this color.

That's stewarts now but it's also a Duo-Sonic II that started in 64. The Duo II in blue would have had black covers, but I guess it could be that the Duo I from the first part of 64 had the brown?

Lovely work. Not keen on the brown covers but I know they're original so I guess they have to stay.

if your mim cyclone DIDNT come with these tuners you got ripped off. either by fender, or the shop, or ebay or where-ever you got it. (im not sure where you got it)

its part of the guitar that makes it cost more than say a mexican strat with shitty modern tuners. there are alot of people (like me) that like slot head tuners. we like them so much that when we go to shops and look at guitars that dont have them we get a little less excited to look at the guitar. stringing up anything but slot head tuners for me is just a huge fucking pain in the ass and a waste of my time.

this is why i actually liked things from the late 90's like the cyclone, toronado, the tom delonge strat.....all these guitars came with slot head tuners (and in cool colors) at a time when everything at the store was red, white, and black. (we are still in that time period it sucks)

this is also a reason (one of a couple) why the squier cyclone costs less than the mexican one. decal, pickups, neck finish, tuners, bridge unit.

i hear what you're saying, but i bought it brand new, from guitar center. it was $50 more than mexican strats (which i already had), but didn't come with a gigbag.

i did end up putting slotted tuners on it, so it's a moot point, but i'm beginning to think the only thing fenders kept continuous was rising prices...

nah, the first ones are brown. but you're right about the II, i forgot about tortoise.
also, 2nd gen. covers and later are not the same as 1st gen. they are different sizes.

obviously the II has white covers. but I wonder if the 2nd gen could have been made into 64 and when they used up all the parts they started with the II.

they were definitely making the old style one in '64 before they kicked in with the new design (the II). i've seen a few with this scheme as stock:

Shortscale, I think we may have stumbled across our very own 'amber switch tips'.

Sub, that's a lovely guitar, spray job looks great, and I really like the colour.
