i have had a jcm800 marshall head forever. one channel, and i have used the same settings since i asked bill barbot from jawbox advice on teles with humbuckers through marshalls. i have it distorted all of the time. i have used volume pedals mostly to back off the distorted tone for clean guitar and this worked great. for a long time i was using ernie ball volume pedals, but always digging around for that perfect "clean zone". fred mascherino (ex-breaking pangea, taking back sunday, now the color fred) told me the key was getting a boss volume pedal with a minimum volume knob and that was the key. that worked great.

after reading all that bullshit, my real question is...

is there a pedal that could cut your guitar volume like that where i could set it and have a footswitch versus having to sweep a volume pedal?

it's called the salt-booster. i've used it with great results for exactly what you're talking about: crank the overdrive on the amp, set the volume on the pedal to as low as you want it, kick it on, and voila! lower output = clean tone.

There are a lot of pedals that could do this for you. Any pedal with a 'level' control that allows you to input an otherwise untouched signal (ie. an overdrive pedal with the overdrive pot all the way down that still gives output) will do the job. I think all of those pedals will change the sound a little, but you might find that's something you don't dislike.

You could also build a pedal that has just a passive volume pot like you have on your guitar (and possibly volume pedal). It would be no more difficult than wiring a guitar other than the drilling the case part.

very true. i'm just trying to give some love to my circuit bending buddy, mike. the salt-booster is so effective at doing EXACTLY what this guy is after that the pedal has become a necessity whenever i take my pro jr anywhere. i consider a part of the amp itself, not an accessory.

but, yes, there are many options that can do this.

Yup the signal pad will do what you're after and if you're in the States it's dirt cheap. I had the idea for a completely passive stompbox "volume-roll-off-in-a-box" idea ages ago, unfortunately EHX beat me to it, but the Saltbooster (And most simple boosters) will do what you want also.

aye. i have its predecessor (the fat booster), and it also does swimmingly at this job. salt booster gets a slight edge in this contest because i like the way it breaks up when you do use it as a true boost. . . and it gets to be a full on overdrive without much encouragement. great little box.
