I'd hit up a Pakistan-made one for starters. A good 10 years ago I scored my first Oud (I was on a raging Armenian cultural trip of sorts), which was made by Mideast Manufacturing and was pretty decent in construction and tone. They've got lutes too, including less-cool looking flatbacks.
