I'm probably guessing this has been asked before but has anyone tried the Seymour Duncan Humbucker Under A Jazzmaster pickup? I just got a Jazzmaster J. Mascis. I like the rhythm pickup sound but the bridge is a little bright and would like to put a humbucker in its place. Any opinions?

yeah, I'm pretty sure a humby will fit under a JM pickup cover. it would be a good way to get the sound you want and not ruin the aesthetics of the JM.

Yeah they make one with either a Alnico 2 or Alnico 5 magnet.

I would do a comparison for you, but don't own a single humbucker any more!

I'm not totally sure if it'll fit without routing, seeing as this product exists:

well, i'm not sure about the height of the pickup but I've placed JM covers over a humbucker and they easily fit. I think the potential problem would be the bits that hang down for the height adjustment (...completely pointless BTW. I have no idea why they ever designed them like that in the first place). However you could probably cut/break them off.

How would you get around the holes in the middle of you pickup cover/ since the poles aren't centered? Or does this matter?

Holes just allow poles/screws to get closer to the strings. Doesn't really matter.

You should be able to do it man. Just wire it correctly and yay.

I've got a normal humbucker under a standard JM cover on my Jazzmaster. It fits fine.

You can always drill new holes for the humbucker pole pieces but you'll still have the empty holes along the centre. I'd probably just cover them up with tape myself.

It will fit. The pole pieces lining up with the holes is only an aesthetic thing, on 'robroe' covers there are no holes to line up with .. it does not effect sound.
You may need something like a buzzstop to tame them third harmonics behind the bridge though, depending on how much gain you use.

David Barfuss makes a humbucker for Jazzmaster, but I'm not sure if you can keep the Cover.

sorry, picture a little big.
