Jazzmaster fixed but still not right... (It's fine now!)

Talk about all other types of guitars. Jazzmasters and basses go here!

Jazzmaster fixed but still not right... (It's fine now!)

Post by Mityushikha »

I've finally got my Jazzmaster fixed but I'm really not happy with the sound of it. I've got a pair of Novaks in it, the neck is great, wound to vintage spec but the bridge is a P90 and sounds just a bit weird and honky and shit. I've got 500k pots in the circuit so it shouldn't be especially trebly, either.

Does anyone else have a JM with P90 in the bridge? I'd be interested to hear how it sounds in comparison. The 'humbucker in a P90' thread has got me thinking about converting it to a half jazzblaster.

Honky?

You could try messing with the tone bleed cap.

When I put a P90 in the neck of my tele copy it was rediculously loud, so that when I played notes they were what could be described as "honky", like, BLARP instead of baow.

I lowered it down away from the strings and it got better.

True enough.

Hot pickup + too close to the strings = massive midrange content.

sorry for the late reply, I went out for a drink after work and it turned into a terrible open mic session...

I will try lowering the pickup height tomorrow. I used to be a regular on offset and for that reason hold novak pickups in high esteem so I can't understand what could possibly be wrong with it... it sounds honky in a trebly mids kinda way I guess, it's just the opposite of my neck pickup 'round' and 'full' tone. I have a gig not that far away so either want to get this pickup sounding good or or order a new one soon.

Thanks all of you for the advice!!

Honky is a derogatory term for whites.

I forgot to answer some of you questions, sorry:

I've tried dialing down the tone and the volume but neither worked particularly well

The tone cap is .47, it's an orange sprague so it should be good for standard JM pickups and a P90 but I've done all the wiring myself so wouldn't be scared of doing a bit more.

I'm using a Laney VC30 and a Vox AD30VT and it sounds honky through both

i'm not sure it's exactly derogatory...

all it means is you don't go up to the door to get your black friends. you just honk.

i do that shit with my white friends unless their mom is hot.

Thanks for all your advice, I got back from holiday yesterday and got the guitar sounding great. Pickups have been lowered and also plugged the guitar into the low gain amp channel which helped a lot. I'm a bit new to tube amps and didn't realise how important it is to actually USE the volume and tone controls on the guitar...
