being having a mess around with pedals today. i got my rat II a couple of months ago. since i got the DLS it was relegated to the pedal drawer. it's a shame as it's a good pedal. i don't like to have too much on my board at one time, i was thinking of using it instead of my tubescreamer. would the rutez mod make it better for using as a boost?

Yup- it makes the tone a lot more rounded with lower gain levels- you can pretty much set the volume to 10, filter to 0, and use the gain control to add a bit of oomph, even just a volume boost. Works better as a boost into another pedal rather than a standard volume boost for solos.

I'm happy to knock up a quick video demo if you want.

Did it anyways, haha.

Your TS might have more of a volume boost with minimum gain settings, making for better CLEAN BOOSTIN'S, but I much prefer the RAT with the Ruetz mod anyways and you might too. Especially if you're not using the distortion all the way up, definitely for a nicer sounding box.

thanks doog. i've been trying to go through my stuff to try and get rid of what i don't use. i want to use the rat in a few of the grittier songs we do, as it has a little more gain than the DLS. so what i want to do is use the rat to replace what the TS9 is doing and use it standalone too.

i have an sd-1 fran, very battered but still working.

I have two Rats, one an '86 stock and one I made. Both are set up to be "boost" pedals more than anything. That's pretty much the only way I use them. They work well, they give a very treble-y boost sound at about 10-11 o clock on the Gain dial.

I have a vintage RAT, DS-1, and Boss BD-2 Blues Driver on my board. I use the RAT and the DS-1 stock as dirt pedals. I use the BD-2 strictly as a cleanish boost. I just set the gain to zero and keep the tone pot straight up.

I've met a few other folks on-line who use the BD-2 the same way. It adds a nice flavor to my clean tone.
