Just ordered a BYOC Univox Superfuzz clone

I just ordered a Univox Superfuzz ("Leeds") clone from BYOC (
linky). Since I'm also a first-time customer, I made sure to get the free "Confidence Booster" and "Signal Tester" kits, too.
This looks like a challenging build. I'll be assembling the Leeds Fuzz in Hungary with my father-in-law who was an electrician before he retired. He's really psyched to help out...but I'm not sure if he'll appreciate the fuzz tones from the pedal. If it works, he'll probably think that we screwed up somewhere!

For the enclosure, I think I'll go with something that looks a lot like the original. Gray (with a custom relic job) with the plain blue logo, and maybe the word "Reissue" or "Clone" or "Klone" in some computer font below it.
Labels for Pots & Switch

I ordered one as the culmination of my Superfuzz search, and it's an amazing pedal. I didn't make it (I got a grown-up to help me) but something you should be aware of if you're planning to use a non-standard enclosure is that the pots and the switch fit straight onto the PCB, so you'll have to fly some wires off for this to work in a bigger box. Sounds like this won't be an issue for you father-in-law though.

Actually, I didn't make this clear, but I *am* planning to use the enclosure that comes with the kit. However, I'm going to bang it up to make it look "vintage" like the one in the photo. I'll prime it then paint the edges and corners with something that looks like rust. Then I'll repaint in gray and see if I can chip off (or otherwise remove) paint from the edges. I used to build WWII models as a kid and I got very good at using an airbrush to simulate rust, exhaust stains, and such. I'll do the same thing to this pedal to make it look 35 years old.
I'll try to find some knobs that look similar to the original and I'll use the same labels (printed from a ink jet printer on to clear transfer plastic). I'll do the same thing for the "Univox Superfuzz" log.

But it's not 35 years old.
Why not build it and try to make it look, y'know.. nice? Seeing as you're building it with your father-in-law maybe base the graphics on something that mean something to him, or yourself, or both of you.

I reckon go for it - it'll be like the X Wing Fighter with battle damage. Always the cooler of the X wings, and possibly where the relic-ing trend was born:

benecol - amazing idea. Need to have X-Wing my DLS I built.
Can you make it fucking happen?
A black/white outlined X-Wing firing red bolt lasers would be great, or the shot of all of them going to Death Star from behind with all the glowing engines in colour.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
On this pedal with the labels removed.
Star Wars related control names.

the 'battle damage' was actually clear backed decals that you stuck on, if i remember. i made my B Wing Pilot 'battle scarred' by colouring his face in with blue biro. didn't look all that great, to be honest...
but anyway, relicing a pedal?? madness.

The battle damaged X-wings I remember (my brother had one - mine was a really early one) came with two sticker sheets, so you could choose battle damaged or NOS. I think the pedal reliccing idea is funny, just becuase there are so many options available to us geeks, many of whom will have had previous with model kits/dungeons and dragons/trainsets. We've considered at work making a pedal covered with flock and little trees and stuff.
Hate the idea of reliccing guitars, mind.

Yeah I had a Battle Damaged X-Wing which I returned to NOS as soon as I realised it looked like shit.

the drummer in my band still has the decal sheets in the box with his mint X wing. in fact, all his star wars stuff is still in the boxes, clean as a whistle. how he could be so business minded at 6 years old, i've no idea. toys are for playing with.

Fucking exactly - one of my only family heirlooms is all my dad's old army toys (metal trucks and tanks, big Corgi, Matchbox and Dinky stuff) from the 50's, and I played with those even. Admittedly, not in that 'make them do jumps out of your bedroom window' way, but they saw their fair share of action. Will hand them on to Benecol Jr soon too.
Bet your drummer can't leave a Snickers in its original packaging for five minutes though, can he?
