NGD: '66 Airline (Harmony) Rocket hollowbody!

Post by Pacafeliz »

ok so i found this little hollowbody crapper for cheap. it's a 2-pickup Harmony "Rocket", but made with the Airline headstock/logo. look them up on the web/ebay.

but mine has these pickups in it:

now doggone it guys... this thing is UNBELIEVABLE! yes it has a short neck (19 or 20 frets) that feels almost square somehow. a floating wooden bridge.

and this one here is beat to CRAP. looks like it was in some grandpa's attic for the last 3 decades. and it had some biblical passage stickers on the top horn (APOCALIPSIS (revelations) 19:5 - so i guess it used to be a church guitar) which i removed.
i shimmed the neck, moved the bridge (had been glued to the body and did NOT intonate before), etc. it feels weird but great, and it sounds almost like some sorta dobro or so, without connecting it. it's got the oh so classic blues sounds, it's almost scary. must be fantastic for slide too.

and finally proceeded to connect it to my Fender Blues Junior amp. OH WOW.
these old pickups are SO clear and loud, i've never heard so nice definition of the notes.

i can't put this thing down. i play like crap but this just SCREAMS rockabilly.

ok here are the pics!

some are before/after removing stickers and moving bridge...

this is fucking sweet.

i'd leave the bible verse (ironylulz) and the headstock looks like a weimaraner.

yea they're great guitars. Mine is pretty fucking loud too. Those pickups are great. Those look quite different from mine, but they probably sound quite similar I'd imagine. old deArmonds are great. I love how they're mounted on wooden blocks.
I don't know about yours, but when I play percussive guitar parts the strings hit the pickup screws on the low E/high E and make big popping sounds. kinda bothersome. sweet guitars though.

That thing would polish up sensationally - don't do any cosmetic fixes, just give it a very light coat of a good polish and work it over thoroughly. Give the fretboard a good soaking in oil and it'll look like a million bucks. Great score.
