Musician's Friend Forever is having a sale on mics. Any favorite brands out there? I would like a standard input--not USB, but I would use it for music and podcasting.

i've always been a big fan of sure microphones
`57 for snare and guitars/bass
58 for vox

pretty much your classic recording setup.

shure sm's are nice and sturdy, they last longer than cheap mics. i only buy cheap mics when they have an on/off switch on them, it's easy to go from silence/loud when you need it. but shure don't have that. i like 58 for bass.

for guitar or any other noises these are REALLY nice


i can't afford them but at gigs when i see they're using those, i smile.

Yeah, Sennheisers e609s are pretty great for a live mic.

I've a sure 58, I liek it. Held up to being flung around, dropped and smashed into people heads for two years.

Audix OM5. that is the mic I always prefer for live vocals. For podcasting and home recoridng ther are probably better ones though.

yeah the sm's are fucking sturdy, i've only ever bought one and now it's all deformed but it still works fine.

google seems to say the ones with the e printed on are e906 ?
i wonder how close their 'cheaper version' comes ? (the one without the 'e' printed on it, that's the e609 i believe?)
never heard it and i don't know much about mics really, but i do remember the first time my amp was mic'd with an e906 and i go off stage to check the sound (someone else playing) and the sound was really good, like full /to the front and not all hollow and 'floaty', that's how i kept remembering these mics.

the e906 (the one you posted), has some bass rolloff and shit switch on it and supposedly has a fuller sound etc... I have an e609 and really love it for live use, but it CAN be kind of tinny/high endy when recording distorted guitar shit. i prefer it for clean stuff. it has amazing off axis rejection that is great for live performance/recording.

Yup, e609 is for sure a good one. That's what I use for guitar cabs/speakers. I like it a lot, but never got on with an SM57....anything recorded sounded kinda bad in general.

I bought the MXR 990/991 combo they had and a cheapo tube preamp...never really recorded with condsenrs so thought it'd be a decent introduction. Haven't had a lot of time to really determine if I like what I'm hearing yet.

I love the SM57. I really only occasionally mic amps with it, since I record direct, but it does wonders on my voice. I've always thought condensers sounded too clear and crisp - almost annoyingly so. The muffled/smooth sound of a dynamic just gets me.

Now I'm using a 1951 EV 611 when i record. It's a dynamic with a giant capsule - very sensitive while still being smooth. It was designed for speaking, so its got a lot of bass roll-off and a little upper-mid peak for that '50s radio-broadcast-tone.

mic sale? hmmm. . . i might be interested in a picking up something cheap.

as for brands i like, i think akg has some of the best stuff for the money, but nobody gets between me and my beta 58 for live vocals.

I gotta tell you that I used to think that SM-57s sounded like balls.

And then I went to a studio with good pre-amps and I thought they sounded amazing.
