1960 Duo Sonic inbound!!! (edit - HAS LANDED, more pix, p2)

Post by drasp »

edit - Updated on 2nd page w/ more pix.

My good buddy Bobby D, down in Key West, found this for me. I've been wanting something old & short, but not had much extra $$$ - the price on this was too good to pass up. Looks like a refinish is in order, but Bobby says its a special one - sounds like he almost kept it!

Anyhow - plan is to do a ReRanch rattle can job once the initial frantic excitement period passes. Top colors at the moment are Fiesta Red, Shell Pink or Inca Silver. Wha choo think!?

I think the finish is cool, reminds me of a Van Gough styled painting of the sea. Great score though.

Keep it the way it is, I think that Marble like finish complements the guitar nicely.

Change the guard. It's very nearly awesome looking, but isn't.

Blue pearloid?

Heh.

The guard will stay, the finish will go. Right now, it reminds me of a botched kitchen in the suburbs or something you might learn to do in a book @ a craft store.

Enough of this guitar has survived in its original form for the last 50yrs. it deserves to remain mostly un-fuckt-with. If I wanted to go wild on a project, I'd snag a Squire Duo (something I've been VERY temped to do. . .)

is it possible the original finish is still under that swirly job? if so, you could just lightly sand down to the original finish and then polish it back to gloss.

I pictured it in my mind and it looked fairly nice.

The shot showing the heel almost looks that way, doesn't it? Its certainly something I'd be willing to sink some elbow grease into finding out. . .

+1. Please don't listen to anyone who says you should keep that finish past the initial 'can't put it down' period. Lovely guitar.

Sure looks like a refret, 'eh? Bobby said he thinks they're the original frets, and I haven't seen it in person yet. The one picture sure makes it look like a refret, but overall the guitar doesn't look like it has enough play wear for a refret. . . *shrug*

It ships today, I hope to have it Sat or Monday.

Yes, that Bobby D.

Correct re: the knobs. On one hand, I wish they were, but on the other hand, those knobs look sexy-hot and Bobby says they're Bakelite. Mmm.

From what I can tell in the pix, the pickup selector doesn't look original either. . . I'm quite anxious to get this thing in my hands, in case you couldn't tell.
