r-tarded pedal making questions - experts halp

Post by hotrodperlmutter »

dudes

trying to build a simple footswitch, where side 1 is boost (on/off) and side two is tremelo (on/off). what is the name of the kind of footswitch where you push it on or off? is it dpdt or 3pdt? i have been unable to figure it out as i am apparently retarded when it comes to searching on the internet.

here's a pic of the stock one. it's for my vox pathfinder (cambridge or valvetronix as well):

also, i'd like to hook it up to just an output jack, and run however long of a cable i need, instead of being limited by the factory cable. is there a way to do this, while maintaining the switching, and not tearing it apart to find out how whats soldered to what (tip/ring)?

is there a way to hook up an led for the boost so i know when it's on?

thank you so much for halping speacil lympcs

Okedokey.

- First off we need to know if these are Momentary (only connected when you're pushing them) or Latching (stomp it into one state, stomp it out of it). To do this take a multimeter set to continuity (beeps when you touch the probes together) and connect the probs to the two lugs that have wires on them on one of the switches. Is it beeping? If yes, it's latching. If no, stomp the switch and try again, still nothing? Then it's probably momentary. You can confirm this by putting pressure on the switch while you have it probed.

After THAT.

- to do a like for like replacement you need SPDT switches (single pole, double throw - i.e. one switch, which switches between two options. In this case the second option is "Fuck All" but these switches are cheaper and easier to get hold off that SPST switches (single pole single throw) in footswitch format.

Can you have an output jack?
- Yes but you will need to use a Stereo Jack Socket and a cable with a Stereo Jack on each end for this to work.

Can you have LEDS?
- Yes but you need DPDT (double pole double throw) switches and also some power in there, maybe from a battery.

Let me know if you want the whole shebang and I'll draw you a wiring diagram.

so i can use dpdt for the on/off style, eh? if not, i'm even more lost than i thought.

as you said i was unable to track down the spdt in fs format.

thanks for your help, i should've just pm'ed, but didn't know if you could be arsed. thx agn.

Yeah you can use a DPDT and just leave one set of lugs open if you're not using an LED. You'll need two of them.
