this belongs to a guy named andrew who does lessons here in town and plays in a band called flatted fifth.
basically about 3 days ago he asked if he could drop off some guitars to be worked on. i said sure.
he showed up with 11 different guitars and requested a speedy turnover time. so far 6 of them have been completed, and one of them is going to stay with me for a while.
this being his 83 fender lead 3.
he bought it for 400 bucks about 8 years ago locally at a music shop.
its all stock and its in pretty darn good shape(no case...)
he basically just wanted me to work some setup magic, fret stuff, and make a new guard for it.
i was going to wait till i had it all done and do a demo of it, but i need to clear up space on my camera so i can take pics of james guitar.
so here are the gut shots!!!
it may be hard to tell but the neck has some really nice figuring in it,
does anyone know what the "2" and "3" dictate? obvisously the 83 is the year.
notice the cbs style neck pocket.
and yes i have made a template of the body, and the guard and i will most likely make a body and a guard at some point for sale on the scale, and if no one wants it im sure that there will be someone on ebay horny enough to pay big bucks for it.

nice! i think the pg would look better with a rounded horn under the jack, than the point (kinda like a strat).
What can you tell about the pickups? They look a bit like the old univox pickups on their lp models. Maybe they're just doubled strat pickups.

they have 4 wires coming out of them.
i haven't tried to measure them or anything, i remember thinking that they sounded decent when i played it a few years back.
when i told aen about this guitar over the phone he was like, "WHAT? ITS GOT THE WEIRD PLASTIC BUCKERS RIGHT?"

This is Fender we're talking about.
My guess is 2 is the model number of something (the guitar that neck style was most used on, maybe the neck itself) and 3 is the number of cats owned by the second person to work on the guitar.

its not really modifiied if its as simple as a switched out guard.
yeah, i doubt that the 2 and 3 are day and month, thats what alot of people think the 60's codes are, but they are so wrong.

As far as the pickups go.....can you see any bar magnets in there? I have wondered if those Lead humbuckers have magnetic pole pieces and sound anything like the Wide Range humbuckers....that'd be cool.

look at the ninth picture down.
instead of doing the neck pockets that leo did, they extented the route so it was like a square with a peice of wood to stop up the butt end of the neck.
it was the universal route of the time. my buddys tele delx is the same way and there isa guy here in town with a 79 strat that is really scary under there!
the mexi tele's(and i think strats) have this sort of neck pocket.
