I was having this discussion with my bother in-law last night (what’s your opinion?)
Were all the great guitar designs used up by the start of the 70’s, not counting variations on past designs (so no super Strats or Tele deluxes etc). The only one I could think of is:

Pretty much every guitar's design (of course there are exceptions, but there are exceptions, not rules) could probably be traced back to old acoustics.
The hourglass kinda thing just owes itself well to a guitar. It sits will on your legs, sits nicely when standing and provides a good amount of access to the neck as well as keeping the thing relatively strong. Add some horns for style and there you go.
That guitar you posted looks like a retarded offset telecaster derivative. It's not greatly original, turn this round bit pointy, add a big spike here and there.

not a fan of BC Rich.
but travis bean yes.
the yamahas and ibanezes we've been talking about recently.
SG2000
Artist
I don't think the designs have been used up just there are only so many designs that look like a guitar. like reece said, most guitar designs are after the shape of an acoustic guitar. the more you start just making up random shapes it just gets dumb.

Body shape inspirations aside, it's very Flying V/Explorer ('58 design) in execution. I don't imagine it being very different to one... And then in the 80s all those guitars were tricked out in the same ways.

ok then a les paul is basically just a telecaster then because it's just a cutaway solid body electric.

with humbucking pickups, a stop tail piece and set-neck design.
well, let's call it what it is. those travis beans are nothing new. oohhhh, wait, instead of a stop tail, they used a strat hardtail, and cut a 't' into the headstock.
fuck, and the neck is aluminum or summit, eh? i'll give you that, but designwise, not groundbreaking.

That is pretty awesome. BC dont get the credit they deserve amongst the more conservative/classic shape users. The Warlock and Bich neck thru natural models are also beautiful guitars.
I cant really think of much else either, even the Jackson RR5 is a Flying V variant.

yea, ok the artist and sg2000 are very les paul like, it's true, but I think they are still relatively original in shape at least. gibson has never made a guitar like either of them.
The travis bean I think is definitely very original. true, I guess they didn't reinvent the entire concept of solid body guitar. but the pickups, shape, and construction are all unique designs.

i've always quite liked them, for some reason. even though it looks like the guitar that guy from babylon zoo would play.
