Only a fortnight ago Shortscalers were buying DuoSonics for $99 in 2009 dollars - not too bad by comparison!

sure it is. today's guitars say squier, have massive fucking necks that are pale as shit, and only come in one color. hardly even a comparison.

If you say so. Duos were always budget models though. I would argue that the bottom end of the market is supplying better quality instruments at lower real prices than ever before - the real comparison is with the rubbish no-name Japanese and Euro guitars which flooded the market in the 50s and 60s. At least these Squiers are usually accurate, and will intonate and generally stay in tune. My 83 Squier is better quality than my 94 Fender in many ways.

I'm not sure which color that is, and you may be right about it being Sonic Blue, but I think how they age(Sonic vs Daphne) is irrelevant here because those XIIs look new in that picture.
