So I got some cheap bus tickets to new york and I was wondering if you guys had any tips on cool places to see in regards of music and guitar stuff...
I'm not interested in touristy spots, or the standard new york places, just neat music stuff.
I figure Manny's _____?______ should be the first stop but other than that I don't really have a clue.
Help me out shortscale!

The only Manhattan guitar shop I've been in is East Village Music Store... I wouldn't really recommend it tho, there wasn't much in the way of electric guitar stuff in stock at all, there's bound to be better stores around NYC...

Yeah W 48th has a load of Sam Ash and stuff, then on Bleeker St. in Greenwich Village there's some very nice guitar shops, couple'a good vintage ones. There's an ace record shop on that street too.

so im in new york right now...
went to mannys/sam ash. they pretty much just put a giant sam ash sign on top of the mannys sign.
it was pretty bland, nothing too interesting to see.
im hoping to find some older shops or something independent sometime this weekend.
id love to see SOMETHING used.
if anyone remembers any cool spots in new york, let me know!
also, anyone here live in new york?

Sorry I didn't see this sooner!
30th Street guitars is pretty good, especially for gawking at amazing vintage stuff (with prices to match). Also good for an occasional celebrity sighting. It's right around the corner from Madison Square Garden.
The guitar shop on Bleecker is called Matt Umanov, and it's good too. They have mostly new stuff, but all of the used gear that they have is excellent. Be sure to buy some cheese at Murray's if you're in that neighborhood.
If you want to take the L train one stop into Williamsburg, visit
Main Drag. The guitar selection isn't huge, but what they have is good and they have more amps than you would ever see in Manhattan. Academy Records is nearby on North 6th, and worth visiting if you like vinyl.
If you want to see some bands, check
Oh My Rockness and
Brooklyn Vegan to see what's going on. If you need a bar recommendation or anything, let me know.

you can also try mandolin brothers in staten island. I personally dont like them or mannys as I have been kicked out of both stores lol but I will admit its worth seeing. But then again getting there from manhattan is a pain in the balls.
