I would consider $500-$700 fair for a japanese jag. They aren't worth $1400. The AV's aren't even worth a grand (though they sell for 2 now).

Fender's current pricing aside, if it's in good condition that would've always been a good price... when US retailers were liquidating their CIJs in '98 they were selling '69 RI Mustangs for $650 on most of the mail-order/online catalogers. I paid $700 for a new CIJ Jag in sunburst (extra charge) that year from AMS.

550 is decent, its not the sale of the century or anything to write home about, but its decent.
i paid like 500 shipped for my red(with matching stock jag) about 2 years ago
and i want to say i paid about 500 for my lpb(with matching stock) about 8 months ago, but it was a shortscale bro deal.
i have heard of people scoring jap jags on ebay for around 300-500 given a good time of the month and what not.

What's the biggest differences between the Japanese jags and AVRI or Vintage Jags?

The only Japanese Jag I have played is the Jaguar HH (black chrome)

The pickups, finish and minute hardware/body dimension specs are different. Japanese Jags have non-potted pickups so they give off squealy microphonic feedback in high gain/loud volume situations. AV Jags have more sustain and resonance acoustically in my experience, and the pickups sound a bit thicker which yields a slightly beefier sound overall. The tailpieces are also higher quality.
They're both fine guitars though. CIJs can be great Jags without having to change much. I just stuck a Mustang bridge and swapped out the bridge pickup on mine.

there is some other stuff like the pups and decal
as far as the vintage stuff, its great. i have never owned one, but played alot of them ranging from beat to hell but og, to modded to hell early stuff, minty stuff, and super rare stuff. all of them were unique in some aspect and there is a def difference between the 62-65 era stuff to the 66-70 stuff, and the later stuff has the typical fender bulky feel, i.e. the neck shape, and body contour, and i think they may have gotten thicker, but that may just be the lack of contour and body shaping that occured later on.

You have to fill the space with stuff (.....dots...) or else it doesn't work.

I thought CIJ and AVRI Jags had the some pots values (1megs in Lead circuit, 1meg/50K in rhythm)

The Japanese jag I owned had the same pot values as the American jags, except that it used the tiny japanese Alpha pots instead of the big american CTS pots. Incidentally, I cannot perceive any difference in tone or quality between the two brands of pots, and I've always been baffled as to why so many people (especially over at offsetguitars.com) feel that it is imperative to swap the japanese stock pots for CTS ones of equal spec.

the pots on my avri jag are silky and rad, probably the best feeling pots on any electric i've ever played. they feel solid, but they move very smooth and reliably. i don't know if this is a selling point for them, and i certainly don't think it means the guitar is worth $2k.
