hey,
i found a guy willing to sell me a hot rod deluxe in fake python skin for $400. apparently fender only made 500 of these ugly suckers, but has anyone tried these out? they look ridiculous, but the original price was $1000 and after my previous deville deal went sour, i want a decent tube amp relatively quickly. any difference between this and the normal deluxe? these amps have a vintage celestion speaker instead of whatever the regular ones have. is the price good enough to overcome the uglyness of this amp? time is of the essence for the seller.

Personally, after looking at used amps, I would say look for something else. I've seen 60's/70's Bandmaster and Bassman heads for $400, but I think they sound better. I have a Hot Rod Deville 410 and would probably opt for a used Bandmaster/Bassman head. I've also seen silverface twin reverbs in the same price range. But, I'm in the US, and I have no clue if you have the same used market where you are. the HR Deluxe/Deville range can sound nice, but I feel there are much better options for the price range.

yeah, you can't find those here in canada period. this deal is looking pretty good to me and i might go for it tomorrow. first tube amp, here i come.

I see silverface reverbs on craigslist in my area regularly for $400-500 regularly, or at least 1-2 times per month.

buy the amp. get matching boots. bleach yr hair. instant stardom...well, I guess a good snakeskin codpiece couldn't hurt.

I think when they work, hot rods are good for what they are, a not very clean amp. They just don't suit my needs, and the drive channel is a waste. If you're into that "speaker kind of break up" type thing, it should be fine.

There's one of these in my local music store, lol. They are pretty hideous.

whatever-- if it is your first tube amp-- go ahead-- you can always flip it in a year or so-- you wont lose money-- then you can figure out what you want in a tube amp

well, then you need to buy those and flip them elsewhere for a mad profit.

the whole HR series is a wash if you ask me. they have little headroom, and sound like turd when they do start to break up if you ask me. But if you're playing at low volumes and just want a tube amp it'll be fine, but you'll run into some issues when trying to play with a drummer if you want to keep a crisp clean sound

that bandmaster is at a good price actually. BUT > Blackface = good, modded = bad
i would get a stock one unless you're just not finding one. get a stock one and if you really aren't satisfied with it start mod-hunting

What tubes did the hot rod series come with stock? When I got mine, the tubes had been replaced and I've always had tons of head room..

yeah, i'd recommend getting a line 6 instead and tinkering with your pedal setup obsessively for months trying to get a decent sound out of it.

that was a good burn. I think Hot Rods are fine as a clean tube amp, I don't think they're quiet. In fact that Master volume taper means it's hard to dial them to anything but unobtrusively loud.

i dunno, i occasionally use mine at home at pretty low volumes. obviously you're not going to get any drive out of it at bedroom level, but it's a 40w amp, i'd be worried if you could.

That's my point, I don't think it breaks up particularly early for a 40W amp.
