I'm not surprised GC could owe them so much.
I was talking to a guy at a big box a while back - they used to carry Gibson but stopped. He said the dealer terms include Gibson just sending them guitars whenever, with no warning. The store gets very little say in what Gibson products they get and they HAVE to pay for whatever Gibson sends them. It's flat out anti-capitalistic.
I used to defend Gibson acoustic, but then they started inflating the J-45. I decided a year ago I wanted one; at that point the sunburst was $1900. Then they upped it to $2000, then $2100. Fine - no big deal, right? Now it's $2400 for the base model and $2700 for the sunburst - all in ONE YEAR.

That second part is complete tripe if you know anything about business and um.. the economy.FitzG wrote:owe Gibson 25 MILLION DOLLARS

Yeah the prices are nuts. Plus the fact that they send out so many guitars that would've been classed as seconds to shops that have to be returned.
I also found out recently that they send out stuff to dealers that they know have issues and give them a discount. In the past they'd be stamped as used and scrapped/sold on well cheap. The PCB setup for the controls is shit too. Not what you'd expect for the price tag.
Anyone buying a new Gibson these days really needs to have their wits about them.

Worse case GC would file BK and reorganize. They would not go under I don't think. They are about the only large scale music retailer around any more. Sam Ash is alot smaller as far as # of stores.
I would expect them to close some stores, renegotiate contracts with Gibson/Fender/etc and move on.
I would only buy a new Gibson from a smaller, well known dealer. For example there is a store here in CA that hand picks all of their Gibson guitars. You may pay $50 more for them but I have never seen one in their store that was not in perfect shape setup and finish wise. Check out GC and you can never say that.
That said, the USA fender and Gibson stuff is obviously just ridiculously priced right now and hopefully the companies start to realize that there is just not enough rich old blues players looking to relive their youth in this economy that can drop 3K on a guitar.
