another competiton STRIPES thread (discovery) NOW WITH PICS

Post by Pacafeliz »

well i just got back from work, ate and then went to the ...uhm... quiet room.

anyways, i took the used-to-be '70 (?) comp'stang with and whilst strumming it i realized, well there's no finish left on the body, except for some tiny pieces of comp' blue in the deeper knicks.
it was then when i realized that... believe it or not... in the less-lit room you can still see the "shadow" of the stripes in the wood!
this would mean that whoever said that the stripes were painted on BEFORE the metallic blue color, had a point.
or it was done both ways.

but i'm über-happy cuz now i'll be able to just tape off those and have the exact distance/form of the stripes, for when i get it refinned.
i'll post pics later!

Pat.

it's been stripped and clearcoated on the body, otherwise all original.

i REALLY want/wish to restore this one to its former glory. it WILL have teh kurdtz someday... i hope (don't have a lot of $$ to spend on refin, so i guess i'll have to do it myself - somehow).

t fits me like a condom (no those are too tight, everytime HA!) glove. it's the LIGHTEST mustang i've EVER played! i love it.
frets are pretty worn but still playable. the neck is deliciously worn in and plays nice and softly... sounds loud and clear.

It could also be possible that you are looking at the stripes being lighter due to the rest of the sand sealer yellowing more due to less layers of paint for UV to penetrate over decades…which if you look at the technology behind X ray cameras you'd be surprised how far light can penetrate ina surface that is opaque to the eye....this is based on my instant research called 'conjecture'.

One of the members here knows a guy who worked for Fender and he got me advice on how they did the comp orange red stripes….perhaps he could ask the dude whow fender did em!? Sure he said in the case of Comp Orange the stripes where a semi transparent colour over the orange. At work so can't check thread right now otherwise I'll be caught and slapped about a bit.

If the stripes had been painted first, they certainly would have sprayed the whole area of the body with the stripe color then masked it and sprayed the body color on top. It would stand to reason that there would then be a shadow from where the whole area was painted and not just the stripe.
If they masked out an outline of the stripe over primer, painted it, then masked over the stripe they just painted to spray the body color, they would have to have been idiots because it would be needlessly labor intensive.
I'll buy Black Cat Bone's reasoning, because the shadows left by the stripe are lighter, due to the paint being thicker where the stripe was and uv rays not penetrating as much.
Rally stripes on cars are done the same way.
I've said it before,'I have never seen a Comp Mustang that had the stripes painted before the body color'.

It only took me 17 years to break mine in.
If you want, just loan yours to me for 2 decades after you get it repainted LOL.
