I want to swap the pots in these guitars for 500k ones. I bought a set of CTS ones and the shafts are to big to go through the control plate. Are the original pots minis? Or are they something different that I am overlooking?

You could use a reamer to widen the holes in the control plate, if you don't want to return the set you have.

I widened the holes with a HSS drill bit.

Get smaller pots. Problem solved.

when ever i have to make the holes bigger on my plates i use a hand drill and a counter sink bit. all you gotta do is counter sink out the top and then counter sink out the back and you can adjust your hole to the exact fit. so much so that you can actually thread the pot right onto the plate.

i stock pots aren't mini pots, they are metric though. CTS pots are bigass pots.

if you ever take a pot out of a epiphone you will see really small mini pots

use alpha brand pots. they fit perfectly in asian-made guitars.

If you really want those pots you'll have to either drill the old plate or buy a new one, and get new knobs too (AV or MXR style ones with a set-screw).

What's HSS? High Strength Steel?

I like Uni-bits, they are really cool.

High Speed Steel. They cut fast but you need a pilot hole.

my ibanez came with those alpha mini-pots. they're great. really smooth and solid feeling. easily as good as any larger sized pots.

You can get larger alpha pots though, they all have 7mm shafts though I believe.
