Great stuff Thom. Some odd changes early on but interesting to see the evolution, the black SG2000's are just pure gorgeous ((drool))

The early ones are supposed to blow 70s Gibbos out of the water, and get a lot of credit for legitimizing early Japanese electrics along with the early Ibanez Artists. I like how they used a sustain block on the bridge.

Unfortunately the soundtrack for this vid is period correct.

I had a 1982 SG200 model, no frills/no binding/etc and it still gave my mates 90's Gibson SG Standard a run for its money. Never played a 2000 model, tried a korean 750 but it was overpriced.
Along with the Ibanez Artist they got the nickname 'Les Paul Eaters' lol. The early 80s Artist i bought from James is possibly the best sounding guitar i've ever owned.. but it weighed a ton, more than any Les Paul i've tried. I would have liked to have kept it as a 'studio guitar' but unfortunately i cannot afford such luxuries neither am i pretentious enough.

You guys ever hear much about the fender flame made in 84 in Japan. One popped up locally, guy wants $300 OBO... but it's got some body damage to it. This pic is of a different one, on ebay for $2400

The other guitarist in our band (in 1975) swapped his Les Paul for an SG2000.

Cool vid. I love the look of the SG3s. Issei Noro, one of my favorite Japanese funk / fusion guitarists, played a Yamaha SG for the longest time...I didn't see it in that vid though. I'm not really sure but I think it might have been a one-off custom for him.

Love those guitars, I was in a shop once after a Les Paul years and years ago, and the guy gave me one of these to try as he said they spanked Gibson and it was great.

yeah, the member here, dub, has a black late 70s one doesn't he? (edit: here)

I think it's a little confusing to call this the "evolution" of the yamaha SG, since a lot these models were offered at the same time or offered later by different names.
