erm what... Memory Toy (with reply from EHX)

So after ordering the memory toy and lookin at you tube reviews I see a few peeps saying they'd received theirs and it was not working properly.

So I just came home after a few drinks to find mine sitting there on the floor. Probably taken in by my Bro's girlfriend who was in earlier.

So I remove mine from the box & plug it in... not working !!!! Pull the power supply out, decide to remove the battery in case that's having some kind of interference with the p/supply. Whilst in the process of removing the back plate all of a sudden... a whole section of the circuit board drops out. WTF. I see it's kinda meant to do that with a spider thing that clips into the other board.. whatever that called. I try putting it back together and yet still nothin'. All that happens is the blend control acts as a volume back to front... and a slight boost in signal maybe. What the hell... really not happy !! Ask for refund, or replacement ?? or quick fix ?

I see the box wasn't closed properly and the instructions wasn't sealed but also taped to the box. Hmmm...

what do you reckon ?
O

i've recieved "used" gear from dealers before, that may be the case here considering the literature in the box wasn't packaged per usual. If possible send it back to the peoples you bought it and get a new one.

Yep, exactly this - they've sent you out a returned duff one. I'd go batshit at them. Who was it, as a matter of interest?

this has reiterated my hate for musicians friend sending me a used nova delay...

I got a brand new one, but I also got mine from pro guitar shop, which is a decent store and they do great demos but that andy guy comes off as a real prick, especially when he responds to comments on the video. Any ways that's besides the point, Ive never had a problem with musicians friend sending me used stuff before. Although it did happen to haze, and probably to you too.

The problems with a botched MF transaction started to outweigh the convenience of a successful one a long time ago for me.

After having to settle for lousy service from MF every 3rd order or so (for lack of replies from them past a certain point) time and time again throughout 2008 (after a couple years and over a grand spent there), being sent the wrong stuff or stuff with missing parts, being sent really cheap/incompatible "lets shut him up" kinda stuff in an attempt to fix aforementioned missing parts situation, being sent blem when I ordered brand new, being sent inoperable when I ordered blem, being ignored in e-mails and being called "Cochise" in another (no shit) and then having an order canceled by a customer support rep just for inquiring as to the ship date for it (over 2 weeks after ordering), I ultimately decided that Musicians Friend are fucking douchebags and anyone who orders lots of stuff online would do their best to pick someone else as a main squeeze. I avoid anyone who uses MF customer support (most notably MF and GC.com, but you have to be careful on the Amazon Marketplace because MF have a lot of Mom 'n' Pop-sounding aliases on there).

Cochise???
Gen X'ers as customer support = bad idea

Cheers guys, I bought it from Hartnolls who I think have a few stores. I generally like to buy from the lesser known shops.

I spoke to them today. Gotta send it back, they don't have another to replace it with which leads me to believe that this may have been a demo model. So there's gonna be a 2-3 weeks wait for a new one but they say they'll give this one to their amp tech to try fix for a speedier turn around, which I'd prob be happy with. They've offered to give me a refund including all postage costs so I don't really have any real quibbles. Working in a guit shop myself I know how much can go wrong on a day to day basis... still if was demo or messed with I'd be sure to let the customer know and would happily drop the price a little. Who Knows... I don't think I'm gonna dwell to much on this. I just hope the pedal is up to scratch for the long term.

O.k. so I sent it back monday, reached them tuesday... called me straight away and put another in the post same day from their other branch in Torquay. No sign today, so perhaps tomorrow it should land with me... hopefully this time unbroken.

Yup, bought one of the first Memory Toy's at the Halsted Guitar Center. Got home, worked fine. One day later, exactly the same issue you had so I just took it back and got a refund.

Loved it for the 20mins I played/owned it but I can handle shit failing like that...figured I'd just hang back and get someting another time that might be a bit more relaible.

hmmmm.... still not arrived. Phoned them yesterday, they say it was posted out tuesday... said to call back tuesday following week if I'd not heard anything. I have a feeling someone somewhere doesn't want me to own this pedal. Can Royal Mail really be this delayed ? Snow ?

I'm hoping that when I phoned they'd stupidly forgotten to post out the item and this has prompted them to put it in the post friday and will arrive here monday, who knows, I'm kinda getting fed up now. First one : broken, second one : mega delayed.

Whats another good small sized and affordable analogue delay ?

I'd say they've probably stuck it on the cheapest postal option available if it hasn't reached you by now.

Well, the first one that was damaged was sent 1st class... my postie keeps giving me wrong post cause he's a bit dumb, so it could be anywhere !!! Not here by tuesday I'm gonna get a refund, visit a guy I know from DV247 and get one on the cheaps, and check that it isn't crapped out... still, I don't feel much confidence in the pedal now though.

Well, delivery was attempted yesterday, so I collected it from the sorting office this morning.

They did post it when they said they would, & posted on the 12th so Royal Mail are to blame for their late delivery.

But guess what, my replacement is also faulty !!!!!!!!! :(

It did work for a short while, making uncontrollable self oscillating noises on whatever settings I used. So I opened it up and filddled with the trim pots and it's just dead. Same again, blend knob acts as a reverse volume.

Does anyone reckon, trying to return the trimpots to factory positions (all 6-7 of them) will have any effect or does this just sound faulty ?

fuck that, i'd just send it back, get a refund and try another pedal. once is annoying but acceptable, twice just isn't on.

Personally I wouldn't give it a third chance, ehx has clearly had a faulty batch as this has been happening to a good number of people. Unless you're completely set on the sound there is no reason to compromise the sound.
Return it and see if they can swing you a deal on Memory Boy

Thanks guys, yeah... I've had it with this pedal. Refund or find something else.

What I liked about it was the fact that it was so small, I'm not a huge fan of the carbon copy & maybe I would have felt the same about this one too... I'm not sure analogue is for me anyways. I do like the clear repeats of my digital echohead delay.

I guess, if aint broke don't fix it.

Heck check out the dd7, it's a extremely powerful digital delay and it cops a good analogue sound aswell.

I tried it and it just did too much from my liking... and didn't really do it for me in the short time I tampered with it.

I actually really like the Echohead, It is a little thin on the repeats though.

I'm almost buying for buying sake, although I did take quite a liking to the memory toy.

Can the carbon copy do prominent repeats on longish delays ?

I can get one cheaper through work & I also know someone who wants to sell.

Again, the short time I demo'd one of these it didn't excite me much either, but that was a while back.... so maybe my tastes have changed.
