i got these huge ass old 1970's Carwin Vega speaker cabs from hilary's dad for christmas. they got real nice solid 12" speakers in them, a mid and a tweeter. they weigh like 80 pounds a piece. fucking crazy things.
problem is they have those red and black clip things like regular stereo speakers got on the back of them.
how hard / what do i gotta do to rip that out and replace it with a 1/4" jack ?

if its just simple rip it out and re-solder the points i can do that. if its something else any ideas?

this is photo of a wall plate that doesn't look anything like the back of the speaker cabs but it does have the red and black clips so you can get an idea

i want to rip those out and just have a simple jack that i can run my mixer right into.



wait a sec......do they make 1/4" jack cables on one end to speaker wire end clippy things on the other? i could just buy those?

They take bare, stripped wire ends. I guess you could crimp ferrules on the wires.

Noise isn't an issue but bare wire may not be practical. If they're going to be pretty stationary like hifi speakers it's fine. If you're planning to gig them, changing to jacks or Speakons would be good. It's straight-forward enough to do that - just find a suitable jack plate, plastic jack socket*, the wire that currently goes to the black clip goes to the ring contact and the wire that currently goes to the red clip goes to the tip contact.

*plastic is safer cause you won't short the output of the amp if someone trips on it and pulls it half-way out. Not likely to be a problem but it's just one of those things.

so its pretty much just like wiring up a jack on a guitar?

what ever is in there behind these clippy things, just cut them off and re solder them to one of these like i would a guitar right?




i don't think they will be taken out of the basement until drew gets good at drums. which could be 6 months to a year ?

did i mention i gave the speakers to drew since i have no fucking more room in my guitar room? yea they are in his basement now chilling un-musical at the moment

could i just buy 2 of these and not fuck with anything?

ok i was completely wrong. they don't got the clippy things. they got the screwy things

i dont have the thing right in front of me but it seems like i could just take that plate off of there, un-solder the imputs and re-solder them to a simple guitar jack, dremmul out a hole on that plastic thing to screw the guitar jack on. this should be simple. then i can just buy 1/4 to 1/4 speaker cable and not fuck with all these fancy ends an pay out my ass.

is your mixer preamped?

are the speakers?

The PCB crossover circuit is bolted to the back of the input panel - you have connections for T(weeter), M(idrange) and W(oofer) on there as well as IN+ and IN-.

That last pair of pics looks like it has combined screw posts and banana (4mm) sockets - with dinky pastic covers for the sockets. The cable you showed earlier looks like jack to 4mm so should be perfect. Otherwise, bare wires into the screw terminals. If these are classic speakers worth good money, don't mess them up.

also, good hi-fi speakers do not equal good guitar speakers. guitar cabs don't have tweeters and stuff because it sounds horrible on guitar.
