I love the Les Paul he had stained orange to look like Eddie Cochran's Gretsch .

Actually I thought he had 2 or three Les Pauls but maybe they were all the same guitar.I read on the Les Paul Forum that his guitar was a Les Paul Standard or possibly a gold top that was refinished and had it's neck replaced 2 or 3 times. It has a Custom neck in the vid and a standard neck in the photos (below).

I realise this is all going kinda off-topic, but the start of Hang On sounds like it's completely ripping off Nirvana's School, which is in turn pretty similar to T-Rex.

Bolan's Les Paul was allegedly an original coveted late 50s burst, but he sanded off the finish and knocked it around a fair bit. It looks like you've heard most of what I've heard, though at one point (the last replacement neck i think) it even appears that he had a Les Paul Custom's neck converted to a bolt-on, it was one with a volute as well, possibly maple.

In the pic of him taking it out of the case, that's an old, modified Gretsch Duo Jet case with extra styrofoam neckrests jammed in. No wonder he went through so many headstocks.

He's not lip-synching in the vid, he either recorded 2 lead vocal takes or they're all playing along with a stripped-down version of the original track... Much of the T-Rex television performances contained a lot of overdubs because they were pretty bare-bones without screaming girls. I always thought the replacment bongo player was a mistake. He wasn't as good as the guy in the acoustic folk duo incarnation of TRex with Marc, and there was no need for him with the full band anyway.

He always had amazing tones no matter what he was playing strats, jaguar, les paul. Some of my favorite tones.
