What do people look for in a strap, Big ass 3 inch leather ones? Ones with trippy designs and patterns? Skinny as an emo kid ones?

nothing wrong with the standard fender ones. a friend of mine has a huge leather strap but it gets hot and sweaty and rubs against my shoulders really hard. and to think he carries around a les paul on that thing
So yeah these guys

one that goes from the peg on one side of the guitar to the peg on the other side of the guitar.

i have never thought about straps past that. i bought one of those regular fender ones and it seems pretty decent so i guess that is my favourite "style".

I often think about getting some flashy/quality strap, but I usually end up spending my money on something more satisfying...
like another fuzz pedal, or alcohol. So I stick with the cheap nylon ones I seem to have just accumulated.

I probably should get some wider leather ones, my two solidbodies are ridiculously heavy.

I nearly ordered two from this aussie company: http://www.dslstraps.com.au/
If they're good enough for lemmy! aha I think I bought a new pickup or something instead.

also these hippies seem legit: http://hippiestrap.com/

Some 2.5" black leather thing - no pad, just a thin regular piece of leather.

this is the one I use, with dunlop strap locks on it, any nylon strap will do, but this is my preferred one, in my preferred color.

I have the blue and white lined one on the Cyclone, The checkered on on the Jazzmaster and the brown/blue flower design on the Hagstrom.
My preference for these is for purely cosmetic reasons cause I'm gay like that. I guess these are pretty good at strapping?

red lightning bolt. black lightning bolt. rainbow strap. colors and plain do wonders too.

hate those caution tape ones, and everything related to it.

or:

hate those guitar center ones, and everything in those strap racks.

its not just guitar center, it seems like every guitar store you go into they just have a rack of shitty novelty straps and big leather ones that are like 5" thick. If they stocked just regular Ernie ball nylon straps they would sell so many more guaranteed.

I've got a couple of Dickies straps, they are comfortable and interesting enough but not in an ott kind of way.

While I like the floral, paisley and psychedelic straps, they are seldom long enough to accomodate my manly frame and wide-ish guitars, so it's Ernie Balls for me: burgundy with the JM, drab green with the baritone, white with the SG (just doesn't look right though, this one) and rainbow with my tele. All these are picked to compliment the colour of the guitars - all you default strap folk are missing a trick.

I found this exact strap but the base colours are blue and white, not green and red. It was on some junky acoustic that someone had left out on the pavement with their rubbish. Definitely my favourite and looks great on the Jag.

I've also got a suede one I found cheap to use on the impossibly neck heavy 12 string SG.

Straps I've owned before these have been nothing to write home about.

Once upon a time I sort of fancied those tricked out straps, but nowadays I go for them simple ones. Haven't bought one in ages, because I also spend my money on booze and effects.

I used to just use the cheap plain black ones. Then after getting the bass in the picture found that it was too heavy to be comfortable. So I bought the suede type strap also in the picture. It's definitely a lot better and was worth the money. Although I probably should have got the more sonic blue colour which is now impossible to find after being discontinued.

I also like the ones that are thin, but slightly padded and a fairly comfortable material. Like most of the patterned ones in this thread. For something not that heavy like the average guitar I'd probably go with one of them, and for something like a Les Paul or a bass I'd stick with one like in that picture. For the Ibanez Artist I sold Fran I'd probably have a small crane behind me to take most of the weight while I stand behind the guitar to play it.

disgusting.

incidentally, when i was buying my bass i picked up a nice comfy looking strap and was about to hand it over when i thought i might as well check the price... £40!! i nearly shat myself. got a £12 one instead, no danger i'd pay £40 for a strap... mutter grumble mumble.
