Why are they so hard to find? The only place I've found that makes them is Warmoth and hunting for maple-necked mustang pics online has turned up a surprisingly small amount. How many of you have played or owned one? Why are there so few of them out in the wild? I'm thinking a maple mustang would probably quack like a strat...

The Maple stang had definitely could produce sounds similar to a strat.

I used to love Maple and always wanted Maple fretboards for the guitars and basses I owned but recently, I've been liking the rosewood better.

I'm going thru the exact same thing but in reverse.
All of my guitars were rosewood until I got a tele last year and now I need more maple in my life. haha.

get a Classic Vibe Duo-Sonic.

other than that it was never standard on any shortscale guitar except for 50s duo-sonics and musicmasters (which were almost all 22.5"). it was only briefly optional on 70s mustangs.

Its a conversion neck. So it will only work on that guitar or a Jagmaster II.

yeah, I wasn't so much trying to suggest necks to snatch off of other guitars as trying to explain why their aren't many around in the first place.... and suggest he get a CV duo.

this IS, in fact, the case. I'm trying to find a maple neck for a mustang body and having trouble doing so.

just going through Warmoth:

Maple neck + fretboard - $157
Straight 9.5" Radius - $35 [they do not offer a 7.25", they want you to buy their bridge] [10"-16" compound is free]
Nut install is $25-$30 - these will be pre slotted but not pre cut, best to cut the nut when its attached to the guitar
Clear Gloss is $85
Tinted Gloss is $105

I would personally avoid the Warmoth neck because i love the vintage radius too much. If i HAD to get a warmoth i would get a bone stock one and install a nut and finish it myself for MUCH cheaper

http://guitarmill.com will also make a maple 24 neck on demand. They dont have them on their website but they will make one if you ask for it.

i was thinking about this very question the other day, and mah mind's a blank. my cv duo has one, but that in and of itself is a rarity (and a squier), and vintage shortscales are even rarer.

That guitar is pretty sexy, I must say. I've already got a body, though... Just need a neck and I doubt Reese'll part this girl out. Plus, it'd have to come all the way back to Canada, which would be very expensive and a pain in the ass.
I don't have the proper tools to finish a neck, or I'd consider going that route myself. Is there anybody here that'll build one for me?

Maybe I'll just have to suck it up and buy thru Warmoth.

There were black ones too.

they were never standard. they were an option. meaning a shop would have to specially order the guitar for you. so you could get a maple neck with any finish they made in the 70s. black, white, sunburst, natural, walnut, trans red, or antigua.

The guy from The Cribs plays an antiqua mustang and iirc it has a maple neck
They were an option, like Mage said. The last run in '84 was from leftover parts (plenty of leftover maple) and was sort of a 20th year
anniversary, those didn't have serial numbers on the headstock for some reason
