Strings breaking when tuning up

This just happened to me. I put a new set of strings on the Jag-stang for a gig tonight, tuned it up, left it overnight, tuned again today, and the small e-string broke when tuning it up (with a tuner).
Has anyone ever went to a store and asked for the string to be replaced for free? Why not? How did you get on etc.

This happens to me when I am stretching my strings, I tend to break the high e right at the bridge. never during play, only at the tuning/stretching stage. I've thought about ordering a bunch of just .10s to compensate.

I am assuming you are breaking strings at the bridge?
Its either the saddles or the tailpiece (at the point where the ball end is held). Something is too sharp and as the string stretches out, it's like rubbing it across a blade. Snap!
The jagstang has Mustang saddles which aren't usually problematic. I'd think that it could be a sharp edge right where the string wraps around the tailpice. If the winding after the ball end falls right there, it could be a weak point.

Maybe try some Vaseline in the tailpiece, bridge saddle and nut?
Or are you using different gauge strings? Or try some Fender Bullets.

Could be a couple things. Your bridge saddles or nut could need lubrication, you may need to knot the strings at the tuning post...Cut your strings so you get less wraps around the tuners--all these things give pretty good string life and help prevent most breakage.

Aye, it's just under the tailpiece. I've had this guitar for six years and have never broken a string on it. I've been playing .011's on it for the last two of those years.

I've never been so bold as to ask for a free one but my local sells them for a pound at least.
If you've changed guage have you looked at intonation recently?

Fucks sakes Paul, they're like 75p each. Sometimes they break (if you're a
n00b) - just go in and buy one.

Buy Rotosound and get a spare top with each set.

then either be a man and use 11-52s or be less of a man and use 11-48s.

I know (well they're £1.00 here, but anyway), it's more the frustration of having to pay for something twice. Why should I?
I doubt very much that it was the guitars fault, although I did take the bridge entirely apart and clean it wit WD-40 before restringing.

I just go ahead and string my guitar up with bass vi strings. it's nearly impossible to play but it's ok because my manliness is insured to an utmost degree.
