Don't know what to do with this ... bass?

Post by kypdurron »

Just got a wrecked up bass from my neighbor, that seems to have been some sort of DIY thing of the older kind. The bridge and stoptail are missing, the pickguard is broken. The wiring was not functional. The pickups work, but sound very thin. And the weirdest thing is that the neck is connected to the body by only 2 screws. Can that hold up? So much about condition.

But on the other hand, the pots, jack, switch and tuners and stuff seem to be heavy duty. on the pots it says 766, and 1M1. So I guess they're 1 meg pots, either from 07-66 or 06-76 :?: Or is this something else than a date code?

Really don't know what do do with it. I don't play bass, so I don't feel like putting mucho money in this, besides I don't trust that neck body connection. I thought about keeping the pots and the jack, and throwing the body, neck and tuners into ebay - but I dunno if someone pays more for this than shipping :?

So, what would you do? Trust and restore it, hang it onto the wall, or flip the parts you don't have use for in other guitars? And .. can youu identify anything in these pics?

i think the neck would be ok, because it's actually got threads in the neck, and they look solid.

i'd fix it and rock it. looks nice. maybe refin the body and leave the headstock. looks gorgeous.

maybe get a less wonky pg made for it (singly ply would rule), then do without the strat style jack (sg/jag/stang style top mount would be cool).

i normally don't like stuff like this, but being offset, i think it looks splendid. def needs some contrast between body and neck wood because they're too similar.

I really like the body. You should do some kind of burst finish.

How heavy is the bass? There's quite a bit of routing.

I think it's a Musima Electra. You should see what you can do to restore it to it's former glory.

i like the natural finish and the hardwear currently on it. Find a bridge and fix it. I would love to have this bass, it looks sweet. :D

Hey thanks, that really helps. Still tempted by just selling the shit off, though, as it's nearly impossible to find the missing hardware I guess. even here in its land of origin, that is.

I love wonkyness of those Soviet-style instruments. According to the "specialists" on the internet, they would need huge amounts of TLC to get them playable. Musima is probably still better than the Urals etc, since DDR products were at least seen as "of better quality" than it's Soviet/Bulgarian/Polish counterparts. Stupid Finland, they always try to overcharge on those instruments here.
