I'm looking to buy some new dirt pedals to replace some Boss ones :/
Right now, I'm liking everything about the BBE Green Screamer and I'll probably get one. Any opinions on this pedal?
As far as actual distortion goes, I don't have a particular pedal in mind. Any cheap suggestions? Maybe an MXR Distortion III or +?
Thanks guys

Try a delta lab rd-1 rock distortion pedal.
bang for your buck, cheap and all that. well worth it.

not to be a whore, but if you want to spend some big bucks i would def check out the eau claire thunder by dwarfcraft devices, i have stood by mine since i got my first one a lil over a year ago. altho endsjustifymeans was on the same boat with me till he got his robot devil from the same company.

the dwarfcraft pedals mentioned are killer- but not cheap--- i got a mxr classic distortion from GC for 39 bucks- apparently it is a clone of the dist 3-- get it it is awesome
also the bbe- am 64 dist pedal is selling for 29.99 and it is great--
i am a dirt master- trust me--

I guess the starter question really is what sort of sounds are you after? This will really determine what people will recommend that is suitable.

ProCo Rat or any of the Danelectro Cool Cat Drive/Distortion pedals are worth a look, get version 1's though if you can.

I'd go with the Pro Co Turbo RAT, or if you wanted something a bit more tame then go with the RAT 2.
Both really good distortions for the price I think.

Classic distortion is a great marshally overdrive that I thought was very versatile. Plus it's just a Dist III in a black box plus tramp stamp!
ECT it fucking brilliant but it's big boy money
Rats are goooood
OCD does some great high gain stuff and is pretty flexible.
I've actually started liking the RC, BB, AC boosters and the like made by Xotic. Really great stuff but I think they only sound good when you're pushing a valve amp with them.
Vexter Box of Rock is great too, if your not pressed for time Mike of MadeByMike.co.uk can build clones of most of these pedals for great prices and top notch quality.

I love the sound of a guitar through a Boss ODB-3 (or the Behringer equivalent). It's heavy as al get out though, big, thick overdrive. Good for metal.
I've also started using my original black Marshall Guv'nor again too. It sounds a bit more compressed and middy than I remember, but it's still a very convincing tube amp sound. I suspect it would sit very well in a live mix with drums and such.
I don't know how the new Guv'nors compare, but Mike always raves on about them, and he knows well his overdrive pedals and his Marshall amps.

I tried out an MXR Distortion III but ultimately ended up going for the GT-OD. They sounded pretty similar on high-gain settings, with the Distortion III being maybe slightly thicker, but the GT-OD could clean up so much more for some different sounds. It definitely has more varied sounds in it than the Distortion III.

I'd check out the barber stuff too. They are decently priced, hand built and sound great. I'm thinking dirty bomb or direct drive would be good to check. I also love my ocd and i'm sure you can find a sweet used one for 100.

Has anyone said DLS yet? No? In that case - Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret - this is my favourite dirt pedal.

I would kill for an ECT, but I'm trading my bronco bass for goots's DWARFCRAFT SPECTACULAR AENIMA. noise will ensue.

so to just echo the general consensus here: buy every overdrive pedal ever.
if that's a bit of a stretch a DLS is a safe bet.

what boss pedals are you looking to replace? any amps you're looking to emulate?
dirt to me is anything but clean. any particular sounds you're after?
i have the green screamer, and it's a great OD pedal. it's not really dirt, so much, as it is an overdrive. never really gets super gritty on guitar like a tubescreamer, but makes bass (the instrument) sound superb.
all the obvious choices:
distortion:
MXR dist III, +
ds-1, ds-2
Rat
overdrive:
sd-1, sd-2
behringer stuff
fuzz:
big muff (russian, nyc, lil' bm, green clones)
tubescreamer (ts808, ts9, ts7 - my fave)
octave fuzz:
Dwarfcraft Robot Devil
MXR blue box
fizz/noise:
dwarfcraft ECT, shiva, etc.

For the Price - I think you have to check out the Visual Sounds Angry Fuzz when it comes to Octave Fuzzes - 120$ new and it sounds damn good.
